Wow! Mercs are costly

Izzit?

Thermostat plus housing for my ML320 was R300-odd
Wheel bearing for my SLK was around the same.
A pair of gas lift struts for the boot was R440.

All from the dealer.

That's quite good. So would it be recommended to buy a 2005 c180?

Agree with Sinbad, Mercedes parts are not priced badly at all. Yes some parts are costly but on the whole I have always bought original parts and have been very pleasantly surprised by the price.

Personally I would not buy a 4 cylinder unless it was very low mileage. Their single gang cam chains tend to stretch with time.

Does the SLK200 have 1 or 2 of these chains? I have only heard of these chains failing twice and both on cars that never even smelt the inside of any type of workshop until the failure occured

Not sure - what's the engine code?

Also remember that was my personal opinion based on the fact that I expect 300000km+ out of these cars ;)

I found Mercedes parts are very cheap...or reasonable at least.

They do seem to charge a little bit more on labour though which is what makes the big jobs seem much more pricey.

Engine code is 111958 32 466610

I understand, my 4 cylinder W202 is coming up for 360 000km's without ever breaking down or having engine issues and I drive her hard for what she has under the bonnet

My local dealer charges less on labour than my local VW charges for labour on Touaregs.
That being said, it's still steep so I DIY as much as I can :D

Looks like the single chain issue is on the M271 engine.
