New Mercedes-Benz B-Class to be show at Paris motor show

The current Mercedes-Benz B-Class has been in production for seven years meaning a new generation is imminent. Right on cue, it’s been announced that the third generation model be shown at the Paris motor show. But what can we expect from the new B?

Scheduled to be displayed alongside the AMG A35, GT53 and GLE, the new B-Class will place greater emphasis on sportiness and dynamics, with Mercedes-Benz careful to also promise improved comfort.

Included in its fresh packaging expect to find a model specific instrument panel including the brand’s interactive MBUX interface.

While the functional overall shape of the new B-Class is likely to remain true to its forbear, could this be the generation that includes an AMG derivative?

Mercedes B-Class confirmed for Paris motor show debut

Third-generation five-seat MPV has been spotted testing ahead of UK sales starting in early 2019

The prototype pictured here indicates the new MPV will offer similar practicality to the old B-Class, with similarly sized door apertures and a low loading lip at the rear.

As with all of Mercedes' latest compact models, the new B-Class is based around a heavily re-engineered version of the MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform. It has been extensively reworked to provide greater levels of rigidity than the existing structure, in a move a source at the German brand's R&D centre suggested will provide the car with “vastly improved ride and refinement”.

Mercedes' initial plan was to produce the new B-Class in both standard and long-wheelbase guises as a means of matching the versatility offered by the five-seat 2 Series Active Tourer and its larger, seven-seat 2 Series Gran Tourer sibling, but the decision to push ahead with the GLB means the new MPV will instead follow the example of its predecessor.

Mercedes buyers seeking seven-seat compatibility in the compact class will be catered to by the new GLB, according to Autocar’s source, who says it has a longer wheelbase than the B-Class. The new SUV, conceived to compete directly against the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, is planned to be sold in both five and seven-seat forms.

However, the new B-Class has grown, albeit incrementally, with minimal increases over its predecessor, which is 4359mm long, 1786mm wide and 1557mm tall.

Inside, the new MPV adopts the new digital cockpit and connectivity functions of the A-Class, including a high-definition instrument and infotainment panel and Mercedes' new MBUX operating system, which supports conversational voice commands.

Improvements in packaging are said to have liberated added accommodation, while the adoption of a newly developed torsion beam rear suspension is said to have led to an increase in boot space beyond the 488 litres of the outgoing model.

The front-wheel-drive model is set to go on sale with a limited number of transversely mounted four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, although other options, including for the first time a new plug-in hybrid powertrain, will be introduced in the longer term.

On the petrol side, buyers should expect a B200 running a 161bhp 1.3-litre engine and a B250 with a 222bhp 2.0-litre unit. The sole diesel at launch will be the B180d, which runs a 116bhp 1.5-litre engine.

Other models will follow throughout 2019, including an entry-level B160 and B220 petrol models, as well as B200d and B220d diesels.

Gearbox choices include a standard six-speed manual, with buyers set to be offered the choice of optional six-speed and nine-speed automatic dual-clutch units depending on the engine. Both the B220 and B250 will also be sold with the choice of 4Matic four-wheel drive.

To counter sales of the BMW 225xe, Mercedes also plans to offer the new B-Class with a new plug-in hybrid system that is set to provide it with an electric-only range of up to 31 miles. To be employed in a new B250e 4Matic model, it uses the 161bhp 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine from the B200 to power the front wheels in combination with a 90bhp electric motor driving the rear wheels.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class puts the emphasis on sport with the Sports Tourer. It looks more dynamic than its predecessor and is more agile on the road while offering greater comfort. Its avant-garde interior makes for a unique feeling of space with the distinctive design of the instrument panel. One of the special features is a basic volume, which drops away towards the occupants and has cutouts in the area of the driver and front passenger. The intuitive user interface of the adaptive MBUX multimedia system is ground-breaking. Its strengths include brilliant graphics, "Hey Mercedes" voice control, a standard touch screen and functions such as MBUX Augmented Reality. When it comes to active safety, state-of-the-art driving assistance systems make the B-Class one of the segment leaders with functions carried over from the S-Class. In addition, the interior is now more spacious, while the engines are more efficient and cleaner. The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission makes its debut. Start of sales for the new B-Class is 3 December 2018, with delivery due to begin in February 2019.

"More practical than ever, more chic than ever," is how Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales, characterises the new B-Class. "In our portfolio of compacts, it's the perfect vehicle for the whole family. And MBUX - the new Mercedes-Benz User Experience - provides also the B-Class with an all-new customer experience with functions that were previously the reserve of the luxury class."

Say hello to the third-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The third-generation Mercedes-Benz has been revealed at the Paris Motor Show, boasting a new design, more advanced cabin and (on some models) a fresh eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Stuttgart-based brand says many of the driving assistance systems available in the new B-Class have been carried over from the S-Class. In addition, the interior is now more spacious, while the engines are “more efficient and cleaner”.

The new model’s wheelbase measures 2 729 mm, while the roofline has been “slightly lowered” (which Mercedes says contributes to a “best-in-class airflow due to the smaller end face of the car”). Wheel sizes range from 16 to 19 inches.

Inside, the driver sits 90 mm higher than in an A-Class, a model that donates some of its interior architecture. You’ll notice the free-standing display unit, which comes in three different versions: with two seven-inch displays; one seven- and one 10,25-inch display; and, in the widescreen version, with two 10,25-inch displays. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia system is also offered.

The centre console, meanwhile, boasts a touch-based control and input system, and comes with a black panel look similar to that of the E-Class. Mercedes says the seats offer a flatter and more comfortable position as well as a larger adjustment range than before.

The rear seat backrest comes standard with a 40:20:40 split, while there are plans to offer (from mid-2019) an option for the rear seats to slide some 140 mm and for the backrest to be folded into a steeper position to vary the capacity of the luggage compartment between 455 and 705 litres.

In terms of engines, a transverse-mounted version of the brand’s 2,0-litre diesel will be offered in 110 kW/320 N.m (B200d) and 140 kW/400 N.m (B220d) outputs. A 1,5-litre oil-burner (as used in the A-Class) will also be available, with up to 85 kW/260 N.m (B180d). Two four-cylinder petrol engines with 1,33-litre displacement will also form part of the range, offered in 100 kW/200 N.m (B180) and 120 kW/250 N.m (B200) forms.

All versions of the new B-Class will feature McPherson struts and forged-aluminium wishbones up front, while entry-level models will come with a twist-beam rear axle. More powerful engine variants (or models with optional suspension systems) gain a four-link axle at the rear.

All-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Revealed

The all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class has been revealed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Let's see what it has to offer.

When the Mercedes-Benz A-Class moved from frumpy MPV to upmarket hatchback, there was a void in practical MPV segment. Enter the B-Class, a practical and sensible family vehicle boasting all the luxury features you'd expect from a Mercedes-Benz but with a family bent.

For 2018, an all-new model has debuted at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. It shares the same underpinnings as the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, but it boasts loads more practicality. Given how MPVs have never been the prettiest of cars, Mercedes-Benz has tried to make its new B-Class interesting. In an effort to make its cabin more spacious, the B-Class has an extended wheelbase of 2 729 mm which is about 30 mm longer than the A-Class. Mercedes-Benz says it will be adding in a model that will feature a sliding second row of seats, which will do wonders for practicality. Inside, the smart and futuristic MBUX infotainment system makes its debut. We've had experience with it in the new A-Class and can only say good things about it. It's truly a huge leap forward for in-car connectivity.

In terms of engines, there will be a choice of five. Two petrols and three diesel engines are available, with the entry point being the B180 which boasts 100 kW and 200 Nm from a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine. This engine comes in two versions and the second has outputs of 120 kW and 250 Nm. Despite the negativity of diesel, Mercedes-Benz will continue to offer oil-burning derivatives. There's a 1.5-litre B180d which has 85 kW and 260 Nm, and a new 2.0-litre diesel engine which is available in two states of tune: 110 kW / 320 Nm and 140 kW / 400 Nm.

Every new Mercedes-Benz B-Class comes in automatic, with the majority using 7-speed dual-clutch 'boxes, while the high-spec diesel uses an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. Mercedes-Benz says all-wheel-drive (4Matic) will be introduced at some point in 2019, but its unlikely to make its way to South Africa. Under the skin, the B-Class has a torsion beam rear suspension, but the top-spec models feature multi-link setups. In terms of trim, you can expect AMG Line and Sport editions. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class should land in South Africa before the middle of 2019.

New Mercedes-Benz B-Class: production officially kicks off

Mercedes-Benz has announced the start of series production of the new, third-generation B-Class at the German firm’s Rastatt plant.

The new B-Class is the third vehicle in the Stuttgart-based automaker’s latest-generation compact vehicle family, after the new A-Class hatchback and sedan.

“The B-Class ramp-up marks a further milestone in the ramp-up cascade of our next compact car generation. Our lead plant Rastatt is exclusively producing the tourer for the global market,” said Markus Schäfer, member of the divisional board of Mercedes-Benz Cars for production and supply chain.

In Germany, the new B-Class can be ordered from early December 2018, with deliveries due to begin in February 2019. And South Africa? Well, the new MPV is scheduled to arrive on local shores in the second quarter of 2019.

“Our entire team is proud of the fact that Rastatt will remain inextricably linked with the B-Class in future, too. A start of production is always a highlight for a plant,” said Thomas Geier, site manager of the factory.

“For this one particularly, we have prepared ourselves intensively. Among other things, a hall was completely rebuilt. Thanks to our experience with the A-Class we are optimally acquainted with the production architecture and can use synergies,” Geier added.

The Rastatt plant boasts around 6 500 employees and is the central training site for all of Mercedes-Benz’s compact vehicle plants.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class B200 AMG line 2018 review

Should I buy one?

Prices haven’t yet been announced, but they will be very much in line with those of the A-Class. That suggests this B200 AMG Line will cost around £27,555 when it goes on sale in December.

The B-Class certainly isn’t a better car than its more conventional stablemate, but those buyers who really would appreciate its more accessible cabin need not be saddled with a demonstrably worse one.

New Mercedes-Benz B-Class: check out SA pricing

The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is expected to launch in South Africa towards the middle of 2019, but we’ve already managed to unearth local pricing for the third-generation version of Stuttgart’s MPV.

First revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018 (with production commencing the following month at Plant Rastatt), the latest B-Class boasts a fresh design, a more advanced cabin and a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (for the diesel model, that is).

From what we understand, the local B-Class range will comprise two derivatives at launch: a petrol variant and a diesel model.

The B200 will start at R526 900, powered by a turbocharged 1,3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine sending 120 kW and 250 N.m to the front axle via a seven-speed automatic transmission. Benz claims this derivative will hit three figures from standstill in 8,2 seconds, before topping out at 223 km/h.

And the B200d? Well, this model kicks off at R559 100, drawing its urge from a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel heart worth 110 kW and 320 N.m. This oil-burning engine is connected to the front wheels by a new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and facilitates a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of 8,3 seconds and a top speed of 219 km/h.

New Mercedes-Benz B-Class touches down in South Africa

The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class has arrived in South Africa, with the local range comprising just a pair of derivatives at launch.

Of course, we brought you local pricing as long ago as the first week of April 2019, but we’ll share it here again.

The B200 is priced from R526 900 and draws its urge from a turbocharged 1,3-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, which sends 120 kW and 250 N.m to the front axle via a seven-speed automatic transmission. Benz claims this derivative will hit three figures from standstill in 8,2 seconds, before topping out at 223 km/h.

Meanwhile, the B200d employs a 2,0-litre turbodiesel engine generating 110 kW and 320 N.m. This oil-burning engine is connected to the front wheels by a new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and facilitates a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of 8,3 seconds and a top speed of 219 km/h. It is priced from R559 100.

The list of options includes an AMG Line styling package (R50 175), various alloy wheels (measuring up to 19 inches in diameter), a panoramic sliding sunroof (R19 400), trailer coupling (R13 600) and plenty more.

All-new Mercedes B-Class lands in South Africa

The third-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class has landed in South Africa, once again giving customers a more family-friendly alternative to the A-Class, but with all the latter’s interior gadgets and technology.

While the styling is evolutionary, the lines are smoother and there’s a definite family resemblance to the latest A-Class, and that’s even more so inside, where the new B inherits its sibling’s aviation-inspired air vents and MBUX infotainment system, although the dashboard panel behind the wide screen has a curvy new design. See the side-by-side 'old versus new' video comparison below the story.

A basic MBUX system is standard, although there are many upgrade options, including the “Hey Mercedes” intelligent voice control with artificial intelligence. There is a lengthy list of snazzy options available in the new B-Class, including head-up display, 64-colour ambient lighting, augmented reality for navigation, climatised front seats with massage function, Multibeam LED headlights, as well as driver assist gadgets such as Active Distance Assist and Active Lane Change assist, and much more.

Mercedes-Benz B200 Style (2019) Review

Fast Facts

Price: R526 900
Engine: 1.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine
Power/Torque: 120 kW/250 Nm
Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox
Fuel Consumption (claimed): 5.6 L/100 km

Price and after-sales support

The B200 Style costs R526 900 and comes with a 2-year/unlimited km warranty and 6-year/100 000 km maintenance plan as standard.

Verdict

Manufacturers invest so much time, effort and marketing money to ramp up their offerings' style, edginess and showroom appeal, but the B-Class does not need to be cool, nor trendy. It largely trades on what it is and what it is capable of. Benz sells commendable numbers of them (and we understand that many buyers are repeat customers), so clearly the Stuttgart-based firm is doing something right with this "sports tourer"...

The high driving position, occupant comfort and luggage capacity are excellent, as is the punchy powertrain, which is reasonably fuel-efficient. Despite our test unit's bizarre spec (R50k's worth of AMG Line kit and R50k's worth of Engineering Package), the B200 Style's defining qualities still shone brightly. If you want sportiness, consider the A-Class, but if you spec this B-Class carefully, you'll get behind the wheel of a highly advanced family hatchback brimming with semi-autonomous safety tech. Alternatively, you could just wait until 2020 for the all-new GLA and GLB crossovers.

Should you buy one? Despite the persistent onslaught of new crossovers and SUVs, we think the Mercedes-Benz B-Class certainly has its merits. While it lacks the glitz and glamour of its A-Class sibling, the focus on comfort and practicality makes it a sensible option, especially for mature buyers, many of whom are scaling down. As far as rivals go, they've all but disappeared (BMW no longer offers the 2 Series Active Tourer).

REVIEW | The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class has improved in 'waists and taste'

Many people mistook it for an A-Class and in one instance standing at a petrol station, a gentleman came up to me and asked me if it was, and he was very curious about the vehicle. I then told him it was the latest B-Class and it was clearly visible that he was caught off guard. He gestured that the 'B-Class is an A-Class that got fat' but definitely not in this case.

Pricing starts from R526 900 with a range of colours to choose from.

Tested: Mercedes B200 is a smart family cruiser, but it could be cushier

It's not surprising considering the design that there's a ton of headroom even for the tallest rear passengers and with a comfortable upright drivers position the B200 is an ideal car to load up the family luggage in the 455 litre loading bay (1 540 litres with the rear bench folded) and head for the long road.

It now also comes with the Mercedes-Benz MBUX multi-media system which adds to the premium-type feel to the cockpit. Once you get the hang of it it's easy to use and can be used by touchscreen, optional touchpad on the centre console and touch controls on the nappa leather wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel.

The B200 doesn't pretend to be flashy or anything other than what it is, it gets on with the job without making a fuss and if you choose your options carefully you get very decent family hatch with a ton of autonomous safety technology without breaking the bank and having to dive into the SUV pond.

Mercedes-Benz reveals facelifted A- and B-class

New models bring revised tech, subtle design tweaks and improved software

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled lightly facelifted versions of the A- and B-class ahead of their planned introduction to the UK market later this year.

The 2023 models receive mild exterior styling changes, including new headlamp graphics and a reworked rear diffuser in combination with the AMG line styling package. There is also a greater choice of colours, including a new line of “Manufaktur” hues in both non-metallic and metallic finishes.

As previously, the Mercedes A-class will continue to offer two bodystyles, with both a hatchback and saloon.

Together with updated colour and trim combinations, the interiors of the new A-Class and B-Class receive an updated steering wheel trimmed in Nappa leather, an additional USB-C port with higher charging capacity, an updated MBUX operating system and a reversing camera as standard.

As part of the MBUX update, buyers will also be able to order the A-Class and B-Class with a fingerprint sensor to identify the driver from early next year.

The new A-Class and B-Class also adopt electrified four-cylinder petrol engines across the line-up as part of the update.
