Mercedes has announced the new GLA-based EV, the EQA./

New Mercedes-Benz EQA revealed as sub-£40k electric crossover

GLA-based EV debuts in EQA 250 form, with future variants promising up to 311 miles of range and AMG performance tuning

The new Mercedes-Benz EQA is the German brand's first fully electric compact model, and is said to provide an "excellent compromise between performance, costs and time to market".

Set to go on sale in the Spring priced from around £39,000 (including the plug-in grant) in EQA 250 form, the brand's entry-level EV is one of six EQ models to be launched by 2022, including a seven-seat EQB sitting directly above the EQA.

Using the latest GLA crossover as its base, the EQA (which Autocar recently drove in disguised prototype form) features a number of unique styling details to mark it out from its conventionally-powered sibling. These include the now signature 'black panel' EQ radiator grille, plus unbroken lighting strips at the front and rear.

The front sees the standard full-LED headlights connected via a fibre optic strip across the front fascia. At the rear a completely different tailgate design from the GLA, which sees the number plate relocated down to the bumper, enables the tail lamps to merge as a single-piece light bar. Mercedes claims these features ensure a "high level of recognisability both in daylight and at night".

Distinctive wheel designs not offered on 'standard' Mercedes models are also available at up to 20in in size. These are bi-colour or tri-colour designs, with some featuring rose gold-coloured or blue detailing. A competitive drag coefficient of 0.28Cd boosts aerodynamics and therefore range.

All-Electric Mercedes-Benz EQA Revealed

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its second all-electric model. Meet the EQA!

What you see here is essentially an all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLA. Merc itself says the new EQA is a close relation to the GLA, and is the first all-electric compact car offering from the German brand.

There will be multiple derivatives of EQA to come, but for now there's this the EQA 250. Under the bonnet there's a 140 kW electric motor, which gives the EQA a range of 486 km based on the NEDC cycle. Consumption is rated at 15.7 kWh/100 km. For those wanting more there'll be an all-wheel drive model, as well as models that have over 200 kW and long-distance versions that are said to offer at least 500 km.

Mercedes-Benz Europe has released pricing for the EQA and it comes to 47 540.50 Euros, which is around R855 000. As for South African availability, it's unlikely we'll be seeing the Mercedes-Benz EQA on our roads any time soon. Fans of the 3-pointed star can look forward to the bigger Mercedes-Benz EQC SUV making landfall in 2021.

Hot AMG-tuned Mercedes EQ electric models on the way

AMG-fettled EQA is tipped to lead Merc’s potent EV onslaught

Mercedes-Benz's two main sub-brands will converge in future, with plans to offer fully fledged AMG versions of EQ models across the electric division’s range, according to the firm’s COO and R&D boss, Markus Schäfer.

Speaking to journalists after the unveiling of the new EQA, Schäfer confirmed that “an electrical platform in the direction of AMG is coming”. Although no specific platform details were given, he followed up the statement by saying: “There will be performance variants of the EQA, B, S, E.”

Dates for these models have not yet been announced, but expect to see an AMG-tuned EQA first, given it’s the first of the listed models to be unveiled.

Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

Which is why it’s impossible to wholeheartedly recommend the EQA, even before you consider that options can easily take the asking price to more than £45,000, which is Polestar 2 money – or the more spacious, finer-riding Volkswagen ID4, in a generous specification, and with change.

As a curtain-raiser for Mercedes’ EQ range, the EQA is plausible on paper and captures the urbane aesthetic the premium market and existing Mercedes owners both demand, but too often this reimagined, zero-emission take on the GLA lacks the polish you’d expect from Mercedes.

New Mercedes-Benz EQA gains 4WD option with up to 288bhp

Mercedes fleshes out the line-up for GLA-based EV, paving the way for full-fat AMG variant

Ahead of customer deliveries getting underway in the coming months, Mercedes-Benz has introduced two new trim levels for its new EQA electric crossover.

Previously, the electric version of the GLA was available to order exclusively in £44,495 EQA 250 guise, which sends 188bhp and 277lb to the front axle, but now a pair of four-wheel-drive options with more power have been added.

Priced from £48,495, the new EQA 300 4Matic adds an extra motor on the rear axle for a combined output of 225bhp, while the top-rung EQA 350, priced from £49,995, takes the total output to 288bhp.

Each is available in a choice of three trims - AMG Line, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus - and shares a 66.5kWh battery pack with the entry-level car for a range of 264 miles. The entry-level car comes as standard with cruise control, a reversing camera, adaptive high-beam assist, a multifunction sports steering wheel and a raft of driver aids as standard, while AMG Line brings bespoke styling elements, 20in alloy wheels, artificial leather sports seats and aluminium interior trim.

The front-wheel-drive EQA 250 is capable of 0-62mph in 8.9sec, but the two new additions to the range cut that sprint time to 7.7secs and 6.0secs, respectively

The battery capacity is 66.5kWh (usable), with a WLTP range of 265 miles promised (a longer-range variant with a claimed 311-mile range will arrive later). A maximum DC charging rate of 100kW is quoted, allowing for an 80% charge in around 30 minutes. An 11kW AC charge can take it from empty to full in just under six hours.

Mercedes EQA 250 AMG line review: is the smallest, cheapest EV Benz a worthy Tesla and VW rival?

I’ve got a short attention span and skim-read to here. Any good?

It’s far from the most ambitious EV you can buy. Be in no doubt. But look at how the German premium giants have made their EV plays. BMW went for boldness and the i3 hasn’t sold in bulk. Audi’s e-trons and Merc’s EQs are much less radical. These are gently-does it gateway cars on the road to the electric tipping point.
