All-electric Mercedes-AMG confirmed for official reveal at this year’s IAA

Daimler’s push towards electrification continues with the latest teaser image of its upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan which will slot right under the EQS. Joining this car on the stage will also be the group’s all-electric Mercedes-AMG and a Mercedes-Maybach concept. These new models will break cover officially at the 2021 IAA in Munich which will take place from the 7th to the 12th of September.

The all-electric Mercedes-AMG will be the first ever battery electric luxury saloon for the group. It will be displayed as the performance arm’s commitment to fuse fully electric models with the traditional characteristics of AMG’s DNA. This is not in relation to the car’s performance figures, but also its involving and emotive handling characteristics. Not much information regarding the Mercedes-Maybach has been revealed but Daimler does state that it will be a fluid impression of how its 100-year tradition of ultimate automotive luxury can be carried forward into a new era.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE has been described as an electric business saloon that offers sporty and comfortable dynamics by combining engaging performance and handling with relaxed travel in mind. As per the brand’s claims, the new offering aims to set the benchmark in its class. Thanks to a one-bow bodyshell design, as seen on the EQS, it’s also expected to offer generous cabin space with an athletic physique.

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQE is electric E-Class equivalent

EQS-aping BMW i4 rival due in 2022 with 288bhp and a range of up to 410 miles

Mercedes-Benz has showcased the next stages of its transition to full electrification at this year’s Munich motor show and its most important unveiling was this: the all-new EQE electric saloon.

It is the second model to sit atop the brand’s EVA2 platform, following the larger and more luxury-oriented EQS, and will be launched in mid-2022 as a rival to EVs such as the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 and Polestar 2. Prices will be confirmed closer to its launch, but expect the EQE to be available from around £60,000 – roughly midway between the E-Class and EQS.

Design

The relationship with the EQS flagship is clear from the EQE’s black front panel, ‘one-bow’ cab-forward silhouette – a hallmark of the brand’s new-era bespoke EV family – and short overhangs at the front and rear. Mercedes also refers to the “sensual purity” achieved by minimising joints, transitions and body lines and suggests the EQE shows off its “athletic character” with pronounced rear haunches and wheels ranging in size from 19in to 21in.

As with the EQS, the EQE has been designed with optimum aerodynamic efficiency in mind, with Mercedes claiming a “very good” Cd figure as a result of its smooth underbody, rigorous panel gap sealing and closed-off grille. It can’t quite match the EQS as a result of its shorter overhangs and standard-fit multi-link front and rear steel suspension, but the aero-optimisation measures “were developed particularly intensively”. Mercedes is even offering specially developed 19in and 20in ‘aero wheels’, including a set with an almost completely closed surface.

Mercedes-Benz EQE

Just a few months after the launch of the EQS, Mercedes-EQ has already presented the next model based on the electric architecture developed specifically for electric vehicles, the new EQE. The sporty business saloon offers all the essential functions of the EQS in a slightly more compact format. At market launch, the model range initially comprises two variants: the EQE 350 with 215 kW, as well as another model. Performance variants with around 500 kW are being planned. Production of the EQE takes place at two locations of the Mercedes-Benz Cars global production network: at the German Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen for the global market and at the German-Chinese joint venture BBAC in Beijing for the local market.

Compared to the luxury liner EQS, the EQE is even more streamlined, with a slightly shorter wheelbase, shorter overhangs and more recessed flanks - it carries the concept of the business saloon into the future. Sensual Purity is reflected in generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions (seamless design). The overhangs and the front end are kept short, the rear provides the dynamic accent with a sharp rear spoiler. Flush with the outer edge of the body, the 19- to 21-inch wheels, together with a pronounced muscular shoulder section, give the EQE an athletic character.

In the outer dimensions (length/width/height: 4946/1961/1512 millimetres), the EQE is comparable to the CLS. Like the latter, it has a fixed rear window and a boot lid. The interior dimensions even clearly exceed those of today's E-Class (213 model series), e.g. the shoulder room in the front (plus 27 mm) or the interior length (plus 80 mm).

Meet the Stuttgart taxi of the future: the brand-new Mercedes EQE

Mercedes launches the EQS's little brother: an executive and passenger express

Here's the Mercedes EQE. You know the drill. Just as the bigger EQS is a fish-slippery luxo-saloon with all the high-end decadences of an S-Class, so the EQE is an electric car of roughly E-Class size.

The bodywork actually shares next to nothing with an E-Class. The wheelbase is long to make more room for the battery and people. The front overhang is correspondingly short because there's no engine there.

The launch car, the EQE 350, has a single motor at the rear, making 288bhp. Twin-motor four-wheel-drive versions will be added shortly.
Then the hot ones: up to 670bhp is planned, says Mercedes. Clearly the AMG crowd are already well into their doctoring.

The 90kWh of battery under the EQE gives it All The Range: starting at 340 miles and, if you spec it right, up to some 412 miles WLTP. Fast charging goes up to 170kW, enough to add 150 miles of range in 15 minutes.

Inside, there's the option to have the same massive hyperscreen as the EQS, running clear across the dashboard. With all that space, most of the functions you use frequently are available without your having to go menu-diving. The system reacts snappily, thanks to an 8-core computer and 24Gb of memory.

Mercedes-Benz EQE breaks cover as an expansion of brand’s EV offering

The Mercedes-Benz EQE has been revealed as an expansion of the German brand’s fully electric line-up. This business avant-garde sedan will slot in directly under the flagship EQS.

Where design is concerned, the Mercedes-Benz EQE features a sporty design with characteristic elements of Mercedes-EQ. This includes the one-bow silhouette and cab-forward design. The overhangs and the front end are kept short while the rear accentuates a dynamic accent with a sharp rear spoiler. On the axles, 19- to 21-inch wheels are available to further enhance a muscular shoulder section.

The cabin of the Mercedes-Benz EQE is accommodated by a 3 120 mm wheelbase. This makes it a bit roomier than the current W213 E-Class which is essentially its ICE twin. Notable increases in size include the shoulder room in the front by 27 mm and the interior length by 80 mm. The seating position is 65 mm more generous while boot capacity measures in at a claimed 430 dm3.

The battery of the Mercedes-Benz EQE has a usable energy content of 90 kWh and a claimed range of up to 660 km The model range will include two variants at market launch. This includes a EQE 350 with 215 kW and a second model that is yet to be detailed. Performance variants with around 500 kW are being planned as well.

New Mercedes EQE is an E-Class for the electric era

The new Mercedes-Benz EQE has been revealed to the world at the IAA show in Munich, and as its name implies it’s something of an E-Class for the electric age. While it doesn’t replace its internal combustion sibling just yet, the writing is certainly on the wall.

The Mercedes-Benz EQE is the second model, after the larger EQS, to be based around the company’s new EAV2 architecture. This means that unlike the smaller Mercedes EQA, EQB and EQC models, which are built around adapted versions of the existing internal combustion car platforms, the EQE has been spawned from an architecture that’s dedicated to electric vehicles.

Mercedes says the new EQE is comparable in size to the current CLS and thanks to the space-efficient platform that places the batteries at floor level, the new electric sedan has more interior room than the current E-Class, with the interior being a whole 80mm longer. The boot capacity is listed at 430 litres.

The first variant to hit the streets will be the EQE 350, which has a 215kW, 530Nm electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Other variants, including 4Matic all-wheel drive models with an additional motor in the front axle, will follow at a later stage, as will performance models with up to 500kW on tap.

Providing the juice is a 90kWh battery that allows for a range of up to 660km between charges on the WLTP cycle, Mercedes says. A DC box with a charging capacity of up to 170 kW is fitted on board for fast charging via direct current. This should allow for a quick 15-minute charge that allows for an extra 250km of range.

New Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV: Tesla Model X rival spied testing

Premium SUV to share electric platform with EQS luxury saloon

The forthcoming Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, which is tipped to launch in 2023, has been spied testing again in Germany.

The model, which will be twinned with the recently revealed EQE saloon in the German firm’s line-up of EQ-badged electric vehicles, was officially confirmed by Mercedes earlier this month with the release of a series of teaser images of a development prototype in camouflage.

The EQE SUV was first spied testing by Autocar in the middle of last year, but the new spy shots show a number of developments from both those images and the more recent official pictures.

The grille area of the SUV is free of camouflage wrap, with a simple black covering instead that is likely to allow the sensors housed in the unit to be tested properly. The new photos also show a more stylised alloy wheel design, most likely conceived to help improve aerodynamic efficiency by reducing drag.

Mercedes set to launch these 5 electric cars in SA in 2022

With the new EQ range, Mercedes-Benz is taking charge of the future by harmonising the demands of a new generation of customers who seek sustainability, emotionality and innovation.

South Africa is very much a part of the strategy. In 2022, Mercedes-Benz SA will be launching a line-up of fully-electric Mercedes-EQ models on local shores. With the EQA, EQB, EQE and EQS, the Mercedes-EQ range is shaped and sized for a wide variety of customer desires.

"With Mercedes-EQ, we are sending a clear signal for sustainability and progress. We are convinced that cross-functional co-operation including with strategic partners is our key to success in order to make our guiding themes of #LeadInElectric, #LeadInCarSoftware and #SustainabilityOverall a reality,” said Mercedes-Benz Cars COO Markus Schäfer.

“A highly innovative and agile team of top experts is currently working on our technology programme EQXX. In the process, we are shifting the boundaries of what is feasible for the CO2-neutrality of tomorrow at an unprecedented rate. Because Mercedes-Benz is striving for nothing less than leadership in this field".

Here’s a brief look at the upcoming line-up.

EQE

If the EQS is the S-Class of the battery-powered era, then the EQE is the E-Class equivalent, albeit with a roomier interior. This is because it is the second model to be based around the new EAV2 platform.

As a true digital native, the EQE also incorporates the new MBUX Hyperscreen, and its display area can be personalised with up to seven profiles.

For a cushier ride, buyers can opt for an Airmatic air suspension system with ADS+ adaptive damping. Rear-axle steering is also on the options list and said to make the large sedan as manoeuvrable as a compact car. Depending on the model, the EQE offers a claimed range of up to 660km between charges.

New Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV edges closer to 2023 launch

Premium SUV starts winter testing shortly after the reveal of closely related EQE saloon

The forthcoming Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV has begun winter testing ahead of an anticipated unveiling next year.

The model, which will be twinned with the recently revealed EQE saloon in the German firm’s line-up of EQ-badged electric vehicles, was officially confirmed by Mercedes earlier this year with the release of a series of teaser images of a development prototype in camouflage.

The EQE SUV has been in development at Mercedes-Benz under the internal codename X294. Unlike the current EQC SUV, the new model will be based on the bespoke electric MEA (or EVA2) platform, and is being lined up to rival the Tesla Model X and BMW iX3.

Mercedes-Benz SA lays out 2022 EV Strategy

As the list of automotive brands that have focused their product strategies on battery-electric vehicles grow longer, some car companies’ local subsidiaries have outlined their plans to add to the number of EV models available in the South African market. Mercedes-Benz SA recently showcased its EV strategy for 2022.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) will launch 5 electric cars in 2022; this follows the news that rival premium brands Audi and BMW will have similar launch schedules for their EV models this year.

Coming up with an EV rollout strategy for South Africa is not as simple as it might be for carmakers in developed countries, because we have some extra red tape to cut through. Suffice to say, even long-established marquee brands are not accustomed to dealing with our market’s specific barriers to entry. Let’s start with the tax issue. A 25% import duty is levied on electric vehicles, whereas that percentage is “only” 18% for fossil-fuel-fed vehicles. An electric vehicle is further subject to 17% ad valorem (luxury tax) because the cost of its battery pack pushes the overall cost of the vehicle into a luxury threshold.

All told, the government taxes battery electric vehicles and hybrids by 42%, which explains why such vehicles remain prohibitively expensive for the overwhelming majority of South African new-car buyers. Many local car companies and the industry body, Naamsa, are lobbying to have this ad Valorem tax removed and it’s widely believed that it could happen early in 2022. Nevertheless, premium brands such as Mercedes-Benz are less affected by excessive taxation because it has less of an impact on a model’s price at a higher price point. Still, right now, the cheapest electric vehicle on sale in SA costs R700k.

New EVs from Mercedes-Benz in 2022

Mercedes-Benz SA plans a staggered launch of its range in 2022 because the semi-conductor shortage is still constricting the supply of vehicles to our market, but it does believe that there will be some improvement in availability as early as the second quarter of the year. The East London-based manufacturer expects that production allocations will return to normal by the end of 2022.

Mercedes to launch these five electric cars in South Africa this year

Mercedes-Benz South Africa has released more details of its electric car plan for 2022, and like its rivals Audi and BMW, the German carmaker is going all in with a comprehensive range of battery cars.

The new Mercedes-EQ division will launch the EQA, EQB and EQC SUVs around April this year, as well as the EQE and EQS luxury sedans. The range will be sold and serviced through 36 specially appointed dealerships.

In terms of charging infrastructure, Mercedes-EQ is teaming up with Grid Cars to provide public charging facilities, and the company will also offer its customers a complementary EQ wall charger, installed at a location of their choice.

Mercedes readies EQE and EQS electric SUVS for late 2022 launch

German firm will launch twinned luxury SUVs this year at £75k and £90k

Mercedes-Benz’s EQ electric car family will soon grow once again with the launches of the EQS SUV and EQE SUV, the third and fourth models to be based on the German car maker’s EV-dedicated EVA platform.

Confirmed by Mercedes boss Ola Källenius in 2020, the EQS SUV is expected to cost from around £90,000 in the UK, while the smaller EQE SUV will sit closer to the £75,000 mark when sales begin later this year.

The technically similar EQS SUV and EQE SUV are being developed together in a joint engineering programme that aims to get them launched within six months of each other.

They will join the existing EQA, EQB and EQC electric SUVs in the Mercedes range.

A sixth, the production version of the G-Class-based Vision EQG concept, featuring a unique quad-motor powertrain, is also currently under development ahead of a scheduled launch in 2024.

First ride: 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 review

We sample Mercedes-Benz’s new electric saloon ahead of its UK introduction later this year

Clearly, we will need more time behind the steering wheel ourselves before giving the EQE a definitive thumbs up, but on the strength of this first ride, it appears very accomplished. In terms of build quality, refinement, dynamic traits, ride quality and interior ambience, the new Mercedes-Benz model looks set to be a far more satisfying proposition than its ageing Telsa rival and the more conventional combustion-engine E-Class, too.

The initial rear-wheel-drive EQE 350 model is not exactly overflowing with performance but it delivers more than adequate accelerative ability. It is the sort of car that I suspect will be very easy to live with if you have access to charging facilities. And even if you don’t, the relatively large battery and a sophisticated energy recuperation system should give it a very competitive range and the sort of economy to match the best in class.

Mercedes-Benz EQE 43 AMG

Mercedes-AMG is consistently pushing ahead with the Future of Driving Performance and expanding its product portfolio with battery-electric performance models. New to the range are the Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 4MATIC and the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+. They are based on the electric-exclusive Mercedes architecture of the luxury and premium class (EVA2). AMG-specific solutions - particularly in the areas of drive, suspension, brakes, sound, exterior and interior design, and equipment - ensure a dynamic and emotively appealing AMG driving experience.

"With two new models, we are expanding our range with purely electrically powered performance vehicles and are thus addressing additional target groups. The EQE 43 4MATIC is the entry-level model for electric Driving Performance from Mercedes-AMG. The EQE 53 4MATIC+, on the other hand, focuses on even more sportiness and greater driving dynamics. And that's not the end of our Future of Driving Performance: After performance hybrids and all-electric AMG derivatives based on EVA2, stand-alone AMG electric vehicles will follow in the not too distant future. These are based on AMG.EA, our new, completely in-house-developed platform," says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

"The compact format of the EQE forms the perfect starting point for realising a highly agile and very emotional driving experience with our AMG-specific solutions. This applies in particular to the areas of drive, chassis, brakes and, above all, sound. This ensures that our customers can also look forward to our brand's hallmark Driving Performance in our second all-electric model series," says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
