With the Concept GLB at the 2019 Auto Shanghai, Mercedes-Benz shows what SUV ideas on the company's compact car platform might also be realised alongside the GLA as a sporty all-rounder. While the latter promises progressive driving enjoyment with its coupé-like lines, the Concept GLB places the emphasis on spaciousness and robustness. The concept car (length/width/height: 4634/1890/1900 millimetres) has space for up to seven occupants thanks to its long wheelbase (2829 millimetres). A number of sturdy features signal that the Concept GLB feels right at home on rough farm tracks.

Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB revealed (previewing new SUV)!

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its new Concept GLB ahead of an official debut at Auto Shanghai 2019, effectively previewing a fresh production model set to slot in between the GLA and GLC.

The concept car measures 4 634 mm long, 1 890 mm wide and 1 900 mm high (including that “permanently installed” roof box) and interestingly boasts space for up to seven occupants thanks to a wheelbase of 2 829 mm.

The show car features shrouds emerging from the roof frame and accommodating LED spotlamps for use off-road. The black roof rails end in a curve at the front and rear, while the aforementioned roof box is mounted on the rear area. The BFGoodrich off-road tyres, meanwhile, are wrapped round two-tone 17-inch alloys.

Inside, the Concept GLB features a third row of seats (with two additional single perches that can be recessed flush into the load compartment floor to increase load capacity). The Stuttgart-based firm says these pews offer “comfortable seating for two medium-sized occupants”.

The basic architecture of the dashboard comes from the latest B-Class, complete with a widescreen cockpit facing the driver and the firm’s latest MBUX system. New features include “off-road-type” tubular elements in milled aluminium at the lower end of the dashboard and a chestnut brown colour scheme.

GLB is yet another Mercedes-Benz SUV and has just been revealed at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show.

Mercedes-Benz believes there is a market for a smaller seven-seater SUV in its product portfolio and has revealed a new vehicle positioned between GLA and GLC.

The concept SUV is called GLB and although it rides on the German brand’s compact SUV platform, there are three rows of seating. Mercedes says that clever cabin engineering makes those rearmost seats comfortable enough for medium sized adults, even on longer journeys, thanks to the second-row seats being 50mm rearwards and 90mm forwards adjustable.

Powering the GLB concept is a Mercedes-Benz’s 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, tuned to deliver 165 kW. That power is split in an 80/20 front axle bias, through Mercedes-Benz’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. An off-road mode resets the power distribution to a 50/50 arrangement between the front and rear wheels, for more balanced traction on loose surfaces.

Although the GLB is classed by Mercedes-Benz as a concept, a production version is expected to be released before the end of this year.

Mercedes GLB Concept closely previews new compact SUV

Mercedes-Benz will soon launch a new compact SUV called the GLB and this concept car, revealed in Shanghai on Tuesday, closely previews this new challenger.

As its name implies, the GLB will slot between the GLA and GLC, but whereas those two fit on the sportier side of the equation, the GLB has a more rugged and practical attitude shining through in its design and packaging.

The 4634mm-long SUV is built on the company’s MFA-2 front-wheel-drive platform that also underpins the A-Class, B-Class and GLA, but the GLB will serve as a more family-friendly alternative to its compact siblings - its 100mm-longer wheelbase allowing the SUV to seat up to seven occupants. Mercedes says that its foldable third seating row can comfortably accommodate two medium sized adults.

The cabin closely resembles the A-Class facia, complete with the widescreen layout and MBUX command centre, but the concept also adds a few extra lavish touches such as Nubuk leather in chestnut brown, open-pore walnut inlays and orange trim strips.

The GLB Concept is powered by Merc’s M 260 2-litre turbopetrol engine as found in the A250, with outputs of 165kW and 350Nm, but the production model will no doubt offer a full range of petrol and diesel engines.

The concept’s 2-litre motor is mated to an eight-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission and 4Matic permanent all-wheel-drive with a central diff that can apportion torque between the axles as needed, and also lock things at 50:50 when required for off-roading.

New seven-seat compact SUV will go on sale this year priced from around £30,000

The baby G: that’s how Mercedes-Benz describes its latest model, the GLB.

The reference to the G-Class suggests the new SUV model has, in some way, a direct link with the military-grade off-roader, but don’t be fooled by the marketing pitch. Although its distinctive exterior design may display some vague similarities, the GLB is a vastly different proposition from the G-Class – and not just on price, which expected to start at around £30,000.

For one thing, the GLB is based on a stretched version of Mercedes’ second-generation MFA platform, which it shares with the A-Class. But at 4.63m long and with a 100mm-longer wheelbase than the A-Class, it sits firmly above the upcoming second-generation GLA and slightly below the GLC. Mercedes knows that, despite its relative popularity, the GLA lacks the outright space of established SUVs such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Volvo XC40.

The GLB will go on sale in the last quarter of 2019, so the camouflaged test car we’ve been given the chance to ride in is a pre-production example.

At 2829 millimetres the GLB has ten centimetres more wheelbase than, for example, the new B-Class. Together with the function-oriented greenhouse this is decisive when it comes to the generous amount of space. The headroom in the first seat row is 1035 millimetres - a best in this segment. At 967 millimetres the effective legroom in the rear of the five-seater is at an especially comfortable level.

The load compartment capacity of 560 to 1755 litres (figures for the five-seater) boasts the qualities of an estate. On request the second seat row can be longitudinally adjusted and as standard the inclination of the backrests is adjustable in several stages. This enables the load compartment to be enlarged by up to 179 litres and put to versatile use.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLB has been revealed not even two months after the unveiling of the concept ... and, like that show car, it features an optional third row of seats.

In fact, the Stuttgart-based firm says the fresh-faced GLB is the first in its segment to be offered with seven seats, claiming the two retractable perches in row three can be used by people “up to 1,68 metres in height”. Passengers back there gain drinks holders between the seats as well as two stowage compartments on the left and right in the load compartment trim, each with a USB port.

Slotting neatly between the GLA and recently facelifted GLC, the newcomer measures 4 634 mm long, 1 834 mm wide and 1 658 mm tall (or 1 662 mm in the case of the seven-seater), with a wheelbase of 2 829 mm (that’s some 100 mm more between the axles than the latest B-Class, in case you were wondering).

Mercedes claims headroom in the first row is a best-in-segment 1 035 mm, while the five-seater model offers a generous 967 mm of rear legroom and luggage volume from 560 to 1 755 litres, depending on the position of the seats. Optionally, the second row can be longitudinally adjusted and as standard the backrests back there are adjustable in several stages.

New Mercedes GLB revealed as family-friendly compact SUV

Launching later this year to challenge Audi Q3 and BMW X1 with five and seven-seat variants

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its new GLB compact SUV, which will rival the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 when it goes on sale in the UK later this year.

The new model is the eighth in the firm’s compact range, and unlike its direct class rivals will be offered in both five and seven-seat layouts. Mercedes says the machine has been designed to offer class-leading versatility to appeal more to family car buyers than the smaller GLA.

The production version of the new SUV, codenamed X247, retains the upright lines of the earlier Concept GLB revealed at the Shanghai motor show back in April, albeit without some of the rugged exterior styling elements.

Based on Mercedes’s MFA II platform, the GLB features a McPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension with optional adaptive damping. It measures 4634mm in length, 1834mm in width and 1658mm in height, making it 21mm longer, 56mm narrower and 20mm taller than the recently facelifted GLC. It has a wheelbase of 2829mm, which is 100mm longer than the B-Class MPV.

While it has lost many of the rugged styling feature from the concept version, the GLB retains a square, angular style inspired by the larger G-Class, including short overhangs at the front and rear, and a new headlight design. Multibeam LED headlights and LED for lights are both available as options.

Inside, the GLB receives a uniquely styled dashboard with an aluminium-look ‘tubular’ lower element. It features Mercedes-Benz’s widescreen cockpit, consisting of a single digital panel housing the instruments and infotainment functions. It is controlled by the latest version of the MBUX interface.

Mercedes-Benz claims best in class front seat headroom of 1035mm and 967mm of rear legroom when in five-seat form.

The five-seat version has 560 litres of boot space, 140 more than the Q5 and 55 larger than the X1, which can be expanded to 1755 litres with the 40:20:40 second-row of seats folded.

In seven-seat form, with two extra seats that can be folded into the boot floor, the GLB features an easy entry function.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB was previewed by an outrageous offroad-biased concept, but as is the case, the production version was substantially toned down. With a length, width and height of 4634, 1834 and1658 millimetres respectively, the GLB is also available with an optional third row of seats. In terms of dimensions, it boasts a wheelbase a little longer than the new B-Class, giving you some idea of the practicality angle that Mercedes-Benz is going for. Mercedes-Benz is claiming class-leading headroom and a boot carrying capacity of up to 1755 litres with all the seats folded down.

Under the bonnet will be a selection of petrol and diesel 4-cylinder engines. Kicking off the range will be the GLB 200 with the 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol 4-cylinder with 120 kW and 250 Nm, while the GLB 250 4Matic features a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 165 kW and 350 Nm. For the diesel fans, there's the GLB 200 d and GLB 220d with the same 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, but in 2 states of tune. In lower spec, it offers up 110 kW and 320 Nm, while the more potent version produces 140 kW and 400 Nm.

Mercedes expands compact SUV family with first-ever GLB

Mercedes-Benz has whipped the covers off its first ever GLB SUV, which is the latest (and largest) member of the compact car front-wheel-drive platform that also underpins the A-Class and B-Class.

Measuring 4634mm in length and 1834mm in width, the GLB is similar in size to the Nissan X-Trail and Land Rover Discovery Sport, and it also offers the option of a seven-seat interior configuration, although that third row is best left to the kids, or those less than 1.68 metres in height.

The GLB has a more muscular design than the other ‘GL’ badged SUVs - and while it's still relatively sleek and modern, one gets the idea that it wants to be a G-Class when it grows up.

Being car-based, it’s not a hardcore off-roader, but Mercedes has put some effort into making it more rugged than the average crossover, and models fitted with 4Matic all-wheel-drive are available with an Off-Road Engineering Package which includes a special off-road light function that makes it easier to spot obstacles in rough terrain in the dark.

The 4Matic system has fully-variable torque distribution and can be configured through three modes, including an off-road function that locks the distribution at 50:50. Those seeking a more comfortable ride can opt for a comfort suspension with adaptive damping.
