Mercer a reliable brand?

Mercer is running a laptop promo available through their dealers. The cheapest comes in at around 7K.
Does this local brand have a good reputation for reliable products and aftersales support?
 
Been selling and working with Mecer equipment for the last 10 years. Have had no issues with the quality.
The major problem with their laptops is the availability of spares after a period of 3 years.
 
Mecer or Mercer?
I got a Mecer Bravo for 5.7k at Computer corporation
Only thing i got a problem with it is it's got a Sis video display chip which is crap cause Sis does not give their driver to Linux but with some browsing i got it to work correctly
other than that it's ok
 
I have had numerous hardware issues with Mecer PC's (haven't used their laptops) and would not recommend them to anyone. Their support was horrific!

I have not used or bought any Mecer hardware in a few years and do not know if anything has changed since.

You can get decent Acer for the same price.

PC prices might start coming down a because of the new Intel processors arriving soon. I'm not sure of the release date.

Mecer Laptops are absolute Cr@p ............Would never purchase another 1 ever again. My cd Writer failed just after the guarantee expired. Will cost R 1200 to replace. This is the second battery that I have got. The latest one after only 2 months, had battery life of 20 minutes, and now switches off immediately when its unplugged.....My Charger failed 2-3 months after the guarantee, and it costed R 700 for a generic since it would have taken Mecer 3 months to get a replacement. The machine itself is coming apart ......Shocking quality or Lack of quality for a machine that i spent just over 12k on .......My idea was to support the local companies ......never again ......I'd rather support a foreign company that actually knows how to build quality machines and knows something about customer support.
 
I always thought Mecer were decent, I mean they have the name, and well when you think Mecer you don't normally associate cheap nasty rubbish....But as Jay has said, they are the biggest load of tripe out...I have heard numerous people complain about them and would never buy one myself just on what I have heard. Rather spend a little more and get an HP or something. I also wouldn't touch Acer.

My mum had a Mecer laptop for many years and never had a single issue...

I think sometimes people just have some bad luck or get a bad one, like Jay2008. I think this could happen with just about any brand
 
It depends on what you are going to use it for. If you plan on using it for gaming or other processor/graphics intensive tasks, then you should perhaps wait.

For normal office use, even a 1.6GHz Celeron should suffice (Running XP).
 
I am biased against them. Just under 7 years ago we bought our family computer from them. The system used bargain basement parts that they could get their hands on, I mean they really cut corners. The fact that this thing still works today amazes me, although the system is going to die soon I think, motherboard or VGA card giving in.

The original hard drive died with a click of death, and was a misery to take the whole system back and get it replaced.
