So, they are implementing this idiotic system this year already. I'm totally against this as I think there will now be leeway for the extreme bias shown by some refs (Goddard, Pollock, Walsh, Lawrence, Leckie and Stuart stand out horribly in this instance).
I think I'm gonna make a point of noting which games favour the side that has their 'own' ref in charge.

What are your thoughts?

I think that there will be alot of eye's on the ref's now, and they all know it, so they will be very carefull on the decisions they make, but one thing is for sure, if Steve Welsh, Shaun Veldsman and JC fortuin ref/tv ref a Sharks game, the Sharks will have to play 10 times harder.

hehe, yeah get back to me on it being a good idea when Goddard fscks your Bulls over again (if I'm not mistaken ..... it was one of them anyway).

I feel a ref should be brought to charge right there on the field, not a couple of days after the game. And it should be legal for one ref to red card another, especially the near sighted ones that usually ref against us

I think there is more chance of the Reds winning the next 10 years Super titles than refs being red carded or even properly reprimanded, unfortunately.

M_H , if you were replying to my post, then you have it all wrong, i'm a Banana/Shark boy, and those 3 refs i mentioned always find a way to scr$w the Sharks over.

If anyone was wondering, yes i am, still sour about the S14 final in 2007.

Lol, well maybe if steyn kicked it out :p:D

I think now ref might think twice before letting his personal feeling show in his decision making :)

How is the new system going to do anything but STOP him from screwing anyone over?

a Ref with the higest merit would bot be biased ;)

That is how he become so highly rated. Sure it leaves room for error but less errors than having morons blowing the whistle

Well you might wanna re-read that list then ...... Morons-R-Us makes up most of the list. The only ones unbiased for sure are our Refs. Goddard and Walsh alone make for some of the most terrible cases of bias against SA sides ever.

I agree 100%, hope this new system can at least lessen it if not root it out.

See now that is the beauty of such a merit system. If the are found to be making errors in favour of their home teams it means less merit.... less merit = less participation. Less participation = less money and so the chain continues.

Now if the refs haven't figured this out by now, they will learn the hard way ;)

But, will it be a game-by-game demotion, a month-by-month one or (the likely) scenario of the refs only losing their merit for the next season. If the last one is the case, that means a whole season is wasted and tainted by bias controversies.

I agree at the lack of clarity. But going forward that will ensure unbiased refs. It might take a season or 2 but it needs to start somewhere :(

What lack of clarity? This stuff has been communicated since end last year already! SANZAR's first merit appointments - there is more info on the website.

I think it is a good thing, and that the best referees has made it up there!

To add a bit more. This will be implimented in all competitions in South Africa for 2009 and most probably into the future...
