Meshnetworks

It's a great idea though the provider of such a service in SA would still require a license from ICASA. While communication between devices cannot be enforced by ICASA the problem comes in at the wireless router stage which would definitely be transmitting over streets.

the only problem being the lack of available bandwidth in sa

Interesting... Wonder how they achieve this? "Since all routing is done below the IP layer..." Very proprietary technology, possibly. This paragraph also pertinent:
"Radio and Frequency Agnostic Routing Technology
Our ad hoc peer-to-peer routing technologies are “radio agnostic”. The same routing technology used with our QDMA™ radio (found in our MEA mobile broadband solution), can also be rapidly applied to other modulation schemes and radios including 802.11a, b and g, Ultra Wideband, WCDMA, OFDM, etc."

Rather look at www.locustworld.com
They are opensource and supported by a huge base of users.

Trouble is that the costs are still to high with them, embedded
boards from www.soekris.com with PCI wi-fi cards is more expensive
than linksys AP's

This is damn interesting stuff!

I firmly believe we should be allowed within the confines of a fair justice system to be able to put up our own networks.

Why do we have to struggle with growth hampering laws and legislation when we should be free to connect ourselves when we can. The situation in South Africa is difficult at the least. It is like your own fast car in the garage but government telling you that you cannot use it because you will put the bus company out of business.

[:(!]

It is sad!

Cheers
