I have a bet with a friend that Messi will outshine Ronaldo this season. He refuses to make that bet and wants to make a bet that Ronaldo will score more goals than Messi this season.

I think its an unfair bet cos they are firstly midfielders and their primary reason for being in the team is to open defences, make plays, setup goals etc.

I made the bet anyway - R200

Who do you think will score more goals this season between the two?

Its also important to note, that Messi does not take free kicks.

Should have been who would be the better player in the season, not who would score the most goals.Barca are lucky enough to have one of the best strikers in the world in Eto'o so dont need to look at messi who is not a stiker for goals.

All that said though I think messi will still score more goals as this season his now taking penalties and has had a good goal scoring start.

Hmm, ronaldo will score more, he plays in that free role at united. He also plays more, Messi is fighting too many players to be guaranteed a start every game.

Ok, now i know not to take you serious :)

Ya man, that was my terms and conditions. But i think he was too scared. His excuse was that it is a matter of opinion who is better at the mid mark and the end of the season.

I dont think so. This season i think Messi will really outshine Ronaldo.

I like Messi, he's good, but to put him up against Ronaldo in a goal scoring competition..... hmmm I say Ronaldo will take it.

Reasons.
Ronaldo is a play maker, he;s all over the field always in play and "makes things happen" his also faster than Messi.
Messi is useless when he doesnt have the ball he just stands waits finds himself in tough situations, I think it must be because of his height, but once he has the ball he knows what to do with it.

So ye Ronaldo to help you lose R200!:)

Do you think Ronaldo will outscore Messi in open play?

Also i think that to measure skill you would have to look at how a player can beat or go through another player. No doubt they both can but i think this is where Messi has the edge over Ronaldo. His dribbling skill is much more superior than that of Ronaldo.

You know what irritates the crap out of me when i watch Ronaldo? He does the cross over move in front of a player but 50% of the time he passes the ball or the tricks (showboating) that he does on the ball doesnt result in anything.

He does the crossover a few times standing still but does not really benefit the team. Can you honestly tell me that Ronaldo can beat a defender better than Messi?

Messi's abilty off the ball is amazing, when you play in a team like Barca it needs to be as they play a very fluent passing game.

Also Messi's defending is better than Ronaldo. He is always chasing the ball. ALWAYS tracking back to defend. He never waits for the ball to come to him.

Yes I think Ronaldos better, I also watch more United games than Barca games but Ive watched Messi, hes good but hardly sees as much of the ball as Ronaldo. Maybe hte commentators are biast but they say Ronaldo alot, thats also because he's on the ball more than other players. Another thing when Ronaldo has the ball somethings gonna happen, hes gonna fall and get a free kick, he will make a goal from nothing or he will "showboat" which is exciting to watch imo. I also think this thread started because of recent form from the players, last season this thread would not have been here, mainly because Ronaldo was definatly better!

Thats coz United has defenders, its not Ronaldos job to defend.

Its every players job to defend. What are you talking about? Strikers need to track back a certain distance and defend as well. When i say defend, i dont only mean defend in front of the box.

I believe Messi was always better than Ronaldo. Last season Messi played the same like he is playing now, he was the leading goal scorer in the CL for most of the tournament. Only in the last game did Ronaldo overtake him.

The reason why this thread wasnt here last year was because Messi was injured most of last season.

Do me a favour, watch Barca play a league match and see what an impact Messi has on the team and the oppostion. The opposition are like headless chickens trying to defend him.

How many times have you seen David Beckham defend in his career? Ruud van Nistelrooy? Berbatov? Henry? Eto? Torres? Drogba?

Rooney (last season) and Tevez (so far) work/defend their arses off... and you've seen how little they've scored.

Eish!

I take it you dont watch La Liga as well

If you think Rooney defends or if u think Tevez defends.

You should see Eto, its like he is on TIK - thats how much he runs trying to get the ball back.

So what you are basically saying is that strikers should just chill on the half way mark and wait for the ball. Once they lose the ball, they must go back and wait for the ''defenders'' to pass the ball back to them.

If only it were that simple:rolleyes:

Well you simply put it that Messi's a better striker than Ronaldo because he can defend and ROnaldo cant....

you didn't explain the other names I mentioned...

what I'm saying is not all players in the Team HAVE TO defend and attack... some just plain LAZY some just pounch around for goals/free headers/space/etc

What my point is saying, "JACK OF ALL TRADE" = "MASTER OF NONE"

ALL players have to drop back and defend!
It would be like playing with 10 men if you had one player who thinks his job is only up front.

I agree, but thats only for corners or free kicks. Or if they getting whipped by the other team. Strikers and Midfield plays between the boxes. And if and when they can defend, its not their job though, otherwise a team can play with 10 strikers and guys like Thuram, Rio and Canavaro wont have jobs then.

Thats stupid!

Every player needs to defend!

Imagine a player who thinks that it is his job just to attack and not defend. As a player, when the ball is lost, its your job to try and get the ball back irrespective of your position. You need to mark your player.

firstly we have to consider that ronaldos season last year was a freak season and will probably never happen again.

then ronaldo is a winger who drifts into the middle, messi is a striker who plays midfield because of the unbelievable array of players at barca.

messi is a more naturally gifted player than ronaldo, messi does things without breaking a sweat as if it was a simple thing whereas ronaldo looks as if he's trying

then you look at players around the two of them for assits and without doubt barca has more players than united that can can set-up two goals and score one on an "off" day

and lastly the leagues the play in, the EPL is notorious for its tough defending while the SPL(la liga) is known for its "entertaining" football, barca have 24 goals in 8 games, united have 13

so my money would be on messi

I agree with you.

Just two corrections:

1) Messi is not a striker. He is a midfielder.

2) Barca have scored 25 goals in the last 5 league matches. They have scored more than 30 if you consider their CL matches.
