Meta klapped with R25-billion fine

Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc. was hit by a record €1.2 billion (R25.1 billion) European Union privacy fine and given a deadline to stop shipping users’ data to the US after regulators said it failed to protect personal information from the American security services.

The social network giant’s continued data transfers to the US didn’t address “the risks to the fundamental rights and freedoms” of people whose data was being transfered across the Atlantic, the Irish Data Protection Commission said on Monday.

The company also promised to “immediately” seek a suspension of the banning orders, saying they would cause harm to “the millions of people who use Facebook every day.”

I know that a small subculture use it, but was referring to the "millions" in the article, which I quoted.

Obviously, if the GDPR regulator impose a fine, the money goes straight to the government fiscus and they do with it what they normally do with money.

If they do not pay, obviously actions will be taken against the registered company, which could be de-registered and the CEO imprisoned.
 
The EU loves their greedy fines, but this one I actually agree with. Why TF does the US want user data of non-US citizens?

Did you read the OP? They were providing non-US citizens' personal data to the American security services.

They may be a US company, but they still have to prevent the US government from snooping on their users, especially non-US users.
 
The Zuc gets a nice Tax write-off to milk for the next few years to realize some capital gains with.

These sorts of fines need to be based on a gross revenue percentage.
