Metal detectors

Im looking for a recreational metal detector. Summer is here and I will be diving and on the beach a lot... so might as well harvest some of the loot bashing up against our shores.

Why not just build one yourself? They sell the kits at Communica for cheap. http://www.communica.co.za/ProductListing.aspx?search=metal detector
They're easy to build for anyone with a bit of electronics knowledge.

I had a friend (he’s in Canada now – hence the past tense) who held the SA agency for Garret metal detectors. I picked up a fair amount by osmosis (don’t really have much interest).

I don’t think building your own (while possible) is such a good idea. They are very sophisticated, with dept adjustment, different metal detection and gain adjustment (eliminate those pesky pull-tabs when detecting on the beach). The underwater version does not have all the bell & whistles but was sturdier for beach work IMO.
