This is the ps3 Metal gear solid thread, if anyone has played it, please let us know what your experience and general opinion on the game is!

If never been a MGS fan. But i think the hype got to me so i ran out to buy it this weekend and all i can say is that I'm impressed. Still getting use to the stealth element but the graphics are the best I've ever seen on any console. The humour is quirky and the controls feel tight. The one gripe i do have is the camera angle gets in the way sometimes(not all the time though)

Awesome, awesome...... AWESOME.

Kojima is to video games what Lynch + Spielberg are to movies.

ACT 1 & 2 - Feels a lot like MGS3 with wide open spaces. Some of the scenes here are simply the closest it gets to war simulation.

ACT 3 ties everything up and if you have been following the series everything starts to make sense. The tight spaces reminds of MGS2

Act 4 - WOW!!! Kojima gives every Metal Gear Fan the answer to the question what if...?
Im not going to spoil and say but this ACT did it for me.

ACT 5 - Just started playing

This game and Assasins creed are at the top of the pile in terms of graphics. I have to agree with toony that sometimes the camera angle does get to you especially when you are pressed up against the wall. I noticed that you can only peek out/over with certain types of weapons and this catches you off guard.

Penny made those comments when he hasn't played it himself?

Play it yourself and then see if the the ratings people give it are well earned or not.

Personally, I think this is a true nex gen title and possibly, game of the decade.

No, I haven't played it. Tycho played it and I linked to his assessment. What I mean is I am willing to put more stake in what he says about a game than companies who give favorable reviews to companies who pay them enough money.

But people have different tastes and just because he didn't like it doesn't mean it isn't a good game.

Yes, very true. I would concur that the story is not as hyped as many people make it out to be, but the overall game, is nothing short of spectacular.

Well, I read the article you linked to and Tycho has *not* played it (s)he only watched a few gameplay videos. Hardly the basis of a "solid" review :)
Personally, I prefer to read the opinions of people that have actually bothered to play the game, but then again, that's just me.

On Act 4 at the moment, and this is, bar none, the best single player gaming experience ive ever had the pleasure of playing. I cant fault it, the graphics, gameplay, varied missions, incredible sound design and loooong cut-scenes are all brilliant, this has set and raised the bar for future games. If youve never played MGS before, you'll still love it, even if you'll be confused as hell by the storyline. I touched a bit on the online portion as well and it was surprizingly lag-free, though the host did have a 5-star rating.
Bottom line - every other game coming out now will probably leave me disappointed. Even if stealth aint your scene, at least give it a try.

That was my mistake, I linked to his previous entry. Read the next entry if you think it will make a difference.

@ZeroSplice - not sure on exact size, but not more than 100 megs, might be even quite a bit less. The Konami ID thing was a bit of a schlep, but you can do it all from MGO main page on your PS3 once the update has been downloaded. Access konamiID page, give your details, get e-mail confirmation and youre good to go.

Thanks sarge!

Looks like I'll have to wait for 2.40 to be released as 2.36 was released yesterday, but, the only new feature is, added support for PS1 games on American consoles.

It would be nice if it weren't compulsory to download these updates...

Saw this game on my mate's PS3 last night. Was suitably impressed by the long cutscenes, we only got about 5 minutes into the game so I can't really vouch for the gameplay.

One question though, what the hell is up with those strange adverts at the beginning?

Adverts at the beginning?

I'd say it's Kojima's way of projecting some postmodernism into the game.

Its a way to mask loading times. When a cut scene plays the game is actually loading up in the background

Actually, I think the game installs once off at the beginning of each Act to subvert loading times in game.
