Hi,

Moving to Metrofibre directly this Month, does anyone know if the provided Router is any good?

Kinda disappointed that I have to wait for a contractor from Metrofibre to come and install the router, as this router has the ONT built into it. So I have been offline since Saturday as I am not able to use my current ONT and Router.

Does anyone know if they have an interactive Website to check your usage for the Month?

The router is okay, Calix ONT + Router combo.
Wifi range wasn't great so I use my old router in AP mode to extend my wifi range.

Install for me was basically just the tech removing the old ONT, checking fibre line and plugging in the new ONT + Router combo , he asked if I was familiar with how to change my wifi settings or would I need help etc... told him I'm good can do all that myself.
He gave me the router box and showed me the FSAN number and said if my service is not activated within a couple of hours I can call the support number and they would do the activation. I called after an hour, turned out the were just busy and the agent said they will quickly call activations and get my line up. 10 mins later it was up.

Don't think there is any way to check detailed usage, I just received the clientportal.metrofibre.co.za link for billing, service change etc... but there is no detailed usage from what I could see.

Do you have login details to change the DNS Setting if you want, lastly does it support OpenVPN protocol?

Kinda sucks that we have to use their router, I could have been online already.

Yep there is a small sticker on the side of my router that has the router admin login details, wifi password etc..
Can change the DNS setting yes but I did not see any option for VPN.

Awesome thanks for the feedback, overall service from them. Is it better removing the middleman?
I know some people mentioned that you pay extra to the ISP for the better service.

The call hold time was a bit on the long side when I called for activation but that was on a Saturday so that might have influenced it.
Haven't needed to log any tickets with customer service yet so can't comment on that unfortunately but I do expect it won't be the same as with a good ISP.

There are plenty of complaints about bad customer service from MFN direct so go in with your eyes open on that one.
I can say the only issue I have noticed is sometimes Hearthstone will start disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly and when I run WinMTR, I see packet loss on one of the seacom hops, turn on VPN which uses another route and the issue goes away.

Overall I would say I get what I pay for, it's a decent amount cheaper and it mostly still works the same for me as previously.
Mostly streaming, browsing and some regular steam downloads which all work fine for me.
I don't do any very latency sensitive gaming so can't comment on that.

Awesome thanks for all the constructive feedback and time you actually took to answer my questions.

Really appreciate it.

Metrofibre contractor arrived this morning at 09:45 AM and internet was online 10:15 AM so happy with that.

Agree for the price we pay and the speed we getting can't really complain.

Will definitely monitor it for a few months if we don't get the service we want, we can just move again.

The white Nokia Router/ONT they supply has a flippen far wifi range, even getting 2 bars 4 houses down the road. The black router/ont (looks like a ps2) they supply now isn't bad either.

Can you buy these routers? I was looking into getting uncap, but I am told that they want to collect the hardware when you stop paying the prepaid. This kind of defeats the purpose of prepaid. My income isn't stable yet so I want to be able to stop the internet when I hit a bad few months.

I can't find any information on the cost. If I knew what fibre connector they used I could buy my own ONT and just let them install the line itself. That way everything is mine. I spoke to a door-to-door rep a while ago, and he just said I can't buy the hardware. So it is a no-go for me.

MFN use either Nokia or Calix equipment the Ubiquiti wont work, as its not compatible, and MFN also need to provision it.
Is there any way for me to buy the hardware from them directly maybe? I asked this question and they just said "no" but if it breaks we have to pay for the replacement so I don't understand how that works. Because if we pay for the replacement it means we should be able to buy the hardware.

But I guess they get to make the rules.
