I'm considering getting metrofibre since they are advertising as Open Access, but what I learnt as part of my conversations with the sales peeps is that they are not open access from day 1 in fact you have to wait 3 months before you can make use of a partnered ISP. Another discovery is that the ONT installed on day 1 is also not open access its locked to MetroFibre this also prevents you from signing up on day one with your preferred ISP.

So is it possible to get metrofibre from day1 with an open access ONT I want true open access from day1 for our complex?

That is correct, possibly not 3 months but that is a guideline given from MFN to us as an ISP. It is closed access during the build of the complex, and then once the build is complete it becomes open access. I don't believe any of this is communicated to the relevant residents associations prior to getting the go-ahead though.

Hi Kido

What you are referring to is correct in most aspects. IF MFN are conducting the fibre roll-out they will arrange for the installation in your estate, provide you with an ONT, and provision your service accordingly. There are different types of ONT's but its easiest to break them up into 2 types: A Layer 3 ONT and a Layer 2 ONT. Our layer 3 Calix ONT's are used when we provision a service for clients signing up with MFN directly or one of our white label partners. IF we had to provision a service for an open access partner like Firestream or Cipherwave we would issue a Layer 2 ONT which is specifically designed for open access. That being said,an open-access service can still be configured over the Layer 3 ONT's if need be.

Its more a question of whether your 'preferred ISP' is an approved ISP with Metrofibre. It would be a nightmare for MFN to have to cater for every single 'preferred ISP' on their network. There is a process that is followed to determine whether or not an ISP can link in with MFN, when the request is approved, the relevant GPON equipment is configured to allow for that ISP's service on the network - there is a fair amount of work and negotiations that take plan on the back end to ensure that that ISP can deliver services over MFN's FTTx network. As time goes by more and more ISP's become available to the client - I have seen the number grow from 2 to 9 already in 9 months...

So to answer your question yes its possible to use MFN from day 1, with an open access ONT. However, you would be limited though in terms of the preferred ISP's that you could use. You cannot simply just bring any ISPs details through to MFN and expect them to make it happen, perhaps in the future, I honestly don't know of any ISP in the country that has that type of service currently. People say that that is 'true open-access' but the truth is no Fibre-to-the-home ISP currently will give you that option.

How it currently works is that you request a fibre link to your home from MFN, we will give you an option of approved ISP's that you can sign up with, and once you decide on what suits you best we will deliver the service to you. No client is locked into anything daunting, or forced to stick with MFN or any ISP for that matter. Clients are free to change ISP's or select their preferred ISP and in those terms it is definitely open-access.

I can't comment too much on the rollout strategy's with all the different ISPs in the estates - I'm not the best person to explain the exact procedure. MFN have currently structured their fibre roll-outs somewhat like PBcool explained - MFN and white label partners are usually given 1st preference in an estate to try and sign up clients. Once the site is completed and built it becomes available to open access partners...this could change in the future who knows. At the end of the day the vast majority of people are more than content with having 9 different ISP's to choose from, all offering different prices and different benefits, over the same fibre. I would suggest you sign a month-to-month contract and choose the most suitable ISP from the list of approved MFN options. I wouldn't recommend requesting an open-access ONT initially because you'd only have 2 ISP's to choose from. Rather get the normal layer 3 ONT as this can cater for any ISP - whether it be MFN, a white label partner or an open-access partner.

thank you all for the feedback much appreciated

Hi Ben$ch,

Where can we get a list of the current ISPs on Metrofibre, you say there are 9 offering services.

Thanks

Ben$ch you are not aloud to post in the forums as a representative of a company in this case MFN.

There is a process to follow with regard to becoming a company representative on MyBB , Please contact RPM and he will assist you.

While I fully understand that there is a process, I do find it odd that Greencom has now become the "forum police". Sorry Greencom, but when I contacted you in November 2015 regarding providing fibre to our estate of 230 houses your response and service was disgustingly shocking, lacked substance and any interest. Ben$ch one-post feedback above was in fact more detailed than all responses from your representatives combined and this has to be said on an open forum.

From personal experience (and in fairness), neither Greencom, SADV, Vumatel, MTN or Vodacom can come even close to the level of feedback and engagement provided by MFN we have received in the last 30 days. I get mightily annoyed when I see posts like yours.
