Michael Jackson dies

Just got into trouble for suggesting to someone on the Thriller crew (West End Show) to update the act and get the lead to pretend to drop dead at the end of the show.... Needless to say I don't think they're going to be doing Thriller as presented by Retrobok tonight or any night soon :D

You guys really should read the other posts before you attempt humour. You all keep repeating the same idiotic jokes.

Anyways, regardless what you thought of the man the fact still remains he was absolutely amazing to watch, he sold millions and millions of albums and he was the only king of pop. People around the world loved him. Personally, i grew up listening to his songs and trying to moonwalk in my bedroom. So for a lot of people, we do feel like we know him somehow through his music. That is why we are saddened by his death.

He is probably the only singer whose music was listened to by both white and black people. When I grew up in the townships, I, and everyone I knew loved his music, when I moved into the suburbs, my white friends and every other white, Indian, coloured, etc listened to his music. Now, Elvis Presley might have sold a lot of albums, but the perception was that he made white music, so black people didn’t listen to his music, some of my black friends don't even know who Elvis Presley is. Bob Marley might have made incredible music and sold millions, but he was perceived as making music for black people, so a majority of white people didn't listen to his music, I just realised from my white colleague that she didn't know who bob Marley was. But Michael Jackson? well well well, EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE knows Michael Jackson, I bet that Osama bin laden is feeling down right now because of Michael Jackson’s death. Michael truly did make music for each and every one, your background doesn't matter. Obama broke the racial barrier and he now appeals to everyone, Will Smith appeals to everyone, Mandela appeals to everyone. So to me Michael Jackson is more than a musical icon, he was one of the first people to cross over.

Kinda grew up with his music as a kid in the 80's and 90's. Seems weird he's gone now. RIP MJ

Some interesting trivia -

Michael Jackson's Thriller sold around 110 million copies - more than double that of the second placed album by AC/DC, Back in Black.

Bat Out Of Hell is in 3rd place.

Scarily, included in the top 10 most selling albums are Millenium by the Backstreet Boys and the soundtrack to The Bodyguard by her whom I cannot mention.

Dark side of the Moon comes in at number 11 which is a disgrace.

michael has taken the money and gone to his plastic surgeon and turned himself into an Afro-American and is now living in the Projects.

Backstreets for me were amazing, the sound track to the body guard movie is one of my favourite cd's of all time.

Celine dion cheesy? You people do not appreciate pure genius and a voice to match.

what about eminem? He has a massive black and white following, in fact all the colours of the rainbow listen to him.

Yup i love all kinds of music, hip hop rap, house, opera (sarah brightman FTW), i like a lot of different songs i do tno mind being called gay because i love certain music :p

he was one of the few artists who crossed racial barriers. So...you must be joking right mr mikey?

WTF? I have yet to see any other "grey" person on the planet... Like **** he crossed the racial divide, his music did maybe but him, he didn't know whether he was black/white/male/female/MJ/Diana Ross. Yes he made a contribution to the world of music no denying that, but after 24 hours of knowing about his death I'm already sick of the media attention.

I cringe to think what will happen when Madiba kicks the rusty bucket...

Bring on the rugby tomorrow!!!

WTF!? Firstly, the fact that you're a Backstreet Boys fan speaks volumes (pun intended) for the respect given to your post.

Secondly, Whitney Houston (apologies davemc) did not write "I Will Always Love You" from the bodyguard - she merely sang it. Yes, she did it well - but you're cocking up your facts here.

thirdly - eminem came decades after black vs white crossover music began. Evidently you have a rather pop inspired and limited knowledge of music...

IMO Madiba's death will be a low-key event in comparison to MJ's death. Although I reckon it's wrong, I believe it is the repercussion of becoming a tabloid based population. I find it obscene and an insult to our intelligence...

I dont think anyone will ever be as big as MJ!
I saw a 5 minute insert BBC last night, it was unbelievable!!!
The way he held the crowd! His dance moves, the music!!
People were fainting and crying!!

I knew every single one of his songs... Brought back memories.
