Hi All

So I am off to get new tyres fitted to my 2007 VW Polo 1.4 tomorrow. A friend recommended Michelin energy XM2, as they come with a decent warranty etc.

The size will be 185/60/R14. Just want to find out if anyone has/have had these, and what you think of them?

I had those exact ones back in the day. They were fine. Got lots of mileage on them.

THanks. I have heard the mileage is good, but what about grip around corners, vibration etc? Do you know if the sidewalls of the tyres are soft?

I have them on my Golf 6, they're fine in the dry, useless when the road is a bit wet.

I had Yokohama S-Drives on my Polo got over 60,000km out of the front ones.

Noise levels are good, sidewalls are a bit soft, lost one to a screw puncturing the sidewall.

^^ this. Can only remember one puncture, but that was a screw in the tread.
They're not noisy at all iirc. Their braking was fine, but then I didn't have ABS.

They are very good tyres. Have done 27000 kms in my Chev Aveo and they still look like new. No noise and pretty good in wet. XM2 have reinforced side walls and they have a pothole guarantee.

That sounds risky...How much did you spend on the S-drives?

Thanks, was a bit worried about the soft sidewalls, since they are not exactly cheap tyres...and I am doing all 4, I currently have continental Ecocontact on the back, one has a flat spot, and they have done some miles so cannot just replace the one. I have savas on the front(got them for very cheap at the time, was an urgent change)

That's good to know, since the warranty seems good.

Shop around for prices . I paid R800 each for the same size you are fitting.

They were around R750 a tyre for 195/55/15, this was a couple of years ago though.

should be quite a bit higher now.

Thanks all, I'll see for possible alternatives before I make the purchase. Doing rear shocks too, those I already bought though...My timing sucks, I kept delaying it, now I have to do it in the same month as rage....damn

I have them a well. I am a huge Michelin fan. You will get a card that the dealer must sign every ten thousand kilometres confirming you have done the necessary alignment and balancing and then they are guaranteed to have at least seventy thousand kilometres of life.

I went ahead and got them this morning, so far so good, nice and quiet. Got the card from them, thank you for mentioning it.

Excellent service and backup from Tiger Wheel & Michelin Tyre

Fitted 4 new Michelin Energy XM2 series tyres to my van end of last year. Did a bit of dirt road on the weekend and once back on the tar, had my attention engaged by a passenger in a passing vehicle pointing frantically at the wheels of my van. It wasn't safe to stop so I drove slowly to the nearest petrol station which as it happened, was only about a km away.

Back drivers side tyre flat as can be. I was amazed because I hadn't felt or heard a thing. Neither had my lady friend. Admittedly, we were only doing between 80 and a 100.

Had a good look at the tread, nothing to indicate it had been punctured. Pumped it up a bit, inner and outer walls ruined and a leak from one place about midway between road surface and rim.

Don't now how comfortable you are with throwing away a premium tyre with only 2000km done, but I battle with that!

Round about the same time last year, I put new Michelins on my car as well and the guy said something about a pothole guarantee as standard for that series tyre. Anyway, it turns out the van tyres are the same series. I had no idea.

Went round to Tiger Wheel this morning and after carefully examining the rim and tyre, (the rim was not bent that I could see) and after dismounting the tyre and examining it some more from the inside, well, they issued me with a brand new tyre on the spot. Fitted balanced, the lot. They didn't even try and hit me with a "pro-rata" payment for tread used! I didn't pay a cent.

So needless to say, I'm a happy chappy. Well done guys!
