Fokkit and I was there like a few days ago, watched live first or second day.
 
Makes me laugh reading interviews with witnesses describing their shock and details of precisely what they saw. Rubbish! They're recounting what they saw in video footage, not what they actually saw. When you watch the video and the camera pulls back everyone on the beach is just sitting there apparently oblivious to what was going on. Only standing up to look once the announcer starts frantically calling for the boats to assist.

Even the live streaming commentator missed it at first and only picked up that something was going on after a few seconds. And he has a monitor in front of him.

The crazy thing was seeing surfers in the water less than one hour after the Fanning incident! No doubt the shark was long gone but still.

Also, some perspective. Less than one fatal shark attack per year in SA waters over the last 98 years.

Just so happy MF is ok.

This could have ended really badly and he was lucky to stay away from the sharp end.
Curious or not, being that close to anything that 'feels with its teeth' is not a good place to end up. That shark turned on him/board a few times. Had the boats not been there, eish.

Do you perhaps have an higher resolution version of the second image?
 
There are loads of encounters with sharks/surfers that do not amount to an attack that are unaccounted for, they are seen often. Its the ones you don't see that do the damage.
Bottom line is if they want to have a go they will, and there is little you can do about it.

I still reckon that had this been on any other free surfing day (not a world contest) without the support semi-rigid moving in so fast while MF was treading water without his board, he may well have got chomped.

He is very lucky to get away without even a physical scratch.

These days more people in the water doing various things, less fish/food stocks, businesses drawing in sharks for profit, the frequency will increase for sure.

Theres currently a pending license for cage diving in St.Francis (just up the drag) that has every watermans nickers in a knot.

And this one was a Friday arvie at Pipe, after work me and my mate hit the water an hour later 300m away at Avalanche with people on the rock screaming at us. 2 of us out and good waves till dark. Met by the police when we got out the water.
