As per the title

The new gen HP Proliant seems a bit expensive at R3828 so are there any cheaper options or would it be better to build my own?

Looking for something in the same form factor as it is for a TV room.

Thanks

Mate of mine bought a microserver off Cabronite for R2500, including screen, keyboard and mouse
You can build something inside a micro case though, but it will be costly

What do you want to use the micro server for ?>If your looking for just storage to stream movies from a NAS box would work perfect

I am using a PI with RaspBMC works for what I need depends on your needs...

If you do manage to get a MS, try and skip the N36L, I am using Plex+ Chromecast, and my CPU stutters when playing 1080p content :(

Something like this from Lian-Li?

I have two N36L's running just fine. No stutter at all running 1080p content.
Check your network cables and hard drives.

Depends if he means playing natively on the Microserver or being transcoded to other devices.

Also there's 1080p and then there's 1080p. Bit rate is the problem not resolution.

I have a 12791 Kbps file for instance that I can transcode to my Samsung TV's Plex just fine, but can't run the same file locally on the Microserver.

Mine is struggling with transcoding to TV with Chromecast plugged in - CPU spikes to 100% and video buffer, play stutter buffer stop play, buffer play - you know the rest

It is definitely not capable of transcoding 1080p. If your media doesn't need transcoding then you're good.

Plex recommends a passmark rating of 2000 per 1080p transcode stream, the n36l only has 809 passmarks.

Sounds more like my initial warning against the 36
My mate bought a 40 and he's perfectly fine^
We're derailing the thread proper though :( sorry

N40L is really not that much better. Has a passmark rating of 964. Still too underpowered for 1080p transcoding.

I have the NL54 and it runs perfectly. A relative saw mine and therefore now he wants one

Hence the thread
