So i wanted to hear by you guys what you think on this move. My old gaming box (Q6600 Quad Core, HAF Case, ASUS Rampage Mobo, 4GB DDR2 And GTX260 Black Ed. GFX) is currently being used as a pure streamer for XBMC Stuff to the upstairs PC's aswell as a torrent client downloader for the parents and there stuff.

Now what i wanted to find out was im thinking of selling the box, getting a HP Mircoserver (Specifically: Servers - HP ProLiant G7 N54L 1P 2GB-U Non-hot Plug SATA 250GB 150W PS MicroServer : Sybaritic - South African Online Computer Store) and with the extras maybe add a ram module or two to the mix. My main question is that is this a valid replacement for what I have now ? My defense is that the PC downstairs is not being used to its extent anymore and its a waste for my parents are mainly into the XBMC upstairs which they love by the way. So my only use of the microserver would be for the youtube on it and thats that.

Im thinking of running a linux dis. on the microserver and hoping this would be a good decision?

I use a microserver for exactly this, and a bunch more ( Virtual machines, etc )

You won't go wrong :)

Great stuff thanks for the heads up and the advice. Im sure its going to make the difference as the big machine isnt needed for what it was once used for. Looking to do this big change and start moving the house to CAT6 cables for better throughput aswell as updating the routers and switches.

Hi There,
I would go with the Microserver. I am sure that you will find someone who will take a gaming box like that off your hands.
I should also land up being a bit quieter too.

Regards

Tim

Let us not forget the power savings you will get, I'm sure your gaming rigs (not-very-old-but-old-enough) cpu architecture coupled with a gaming rig PSU amounts to a heavy consumer of power? Microservers are more conservative on your electricity bill as well, although I must admit it is not enough such that it will pay for itself :D

I'd keep the rig. You're looking at ~75W difference - at that rate its going to take quite some time to recoup the layout for a microserver (well depends on whether you can sell it).

Also quite a diff in raw power....even the latest N54L is no where near a q6600. I'd consider undervolting the q6600 though.

The microservers are pretty great, esp when on discount, but ultimately its just a PC and not a powerful one at that. Beyond being cheap and power efficient they don't have all that much going for them.

Pity you're not selling as components...I could use a HAF case.

oh and lose the cat6 idea...you'll see exactly zero benefit for short distance residential application.

You want to know whether trading in a Q6600 Quad Core, HAF Case, ASUS Rampage Mobo, 4GB DDR2, GTX260 PC for a microserver is a smart idea?

No.
