Microsoft announces Surface Pro pricing for US consumers

I do know that yes. So can any netbook or laptop in the world, and probably faster and more suited to the task. That's why I say superior - e.g. actually built for a tablet environment. Or do you think there's an untapped market of CAD architects who were just waiting for a 10" tablet hybrid to fill that niche?

Not CAD, but you would be surprised how many artists and modelers want a lightweight, high-powered tabled with a pen.

The Surface doesn't have a pen though does it? I know the Samsung Ativ has the S Pen but I'm not sure if it has the Wacom layer like the Note series.

I don't know, but I what I do know is that it's not only CAD architects who use laptops.

It's a misaimed product - it doesn't seem to do one thing particularly well, undoubtedly does a lot of things in a mediocre sort of way, and comes in at a price level that makes it impossible to recommend in such a crowded marketplace, especially when the iPad is already such a powerful and well priced option, not to mention the bucketfuls of Android tabs on the market.

Anyway, am I reading correctly that the Surfaces does NOT include built in 3G? Surely this should at least be an option.

Yea you could plug a dongle into it, but thats really lame, especially when you are next to your friends whom are holding stupid iPads with built in 3G.

I know nearly every major US city is blanketed in WiFi, but what about the rest of the world?

So are you going to buy one? Please let us know how it is. Personally I'm torn between getting a Surface Pro or sticking to my current work laptop that has twice the ram, multiple times more hard disk space, a better keyboard, a much bigger screen, a faster processor, better battery life, and cost R3000 less a year ago when it was purchased. Because at the moment my work laptop means that my iPad is freed up for content consumption and very light work, which it excels at due to the form factor and relatively low price. On the other hand my instance of MS Visio process flow design just screams 'touch interface!!!' Choices, choices, my word what to do.

Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro looks like a winner, a very expensive winner.

It's still $800 for a lap-net-hybrid-swivel-ultra-whateverthehellitis with an ATOM chip. That does not scream winner to me. Oh I see there's also a Pro version....but at $800 for the non-pro what are they going to ask for something that isn't hamster-wheel powered?

I just don't understand why it doesn't have 3G.

I am not really sure who they are aiming for with this device (Pro or RT).

I'd understand Pro without 3G because if you are going to buy a Pro then you have WiFi in most places you go. But, for the more budget conscious RT buyer, even in the developed nations, I don't think that WiFi connections are that ubiquitous.

Sigh... All I said was that the ipad 3 and the Surface aren’t equivalent the one is a laptop replacement or really a Ultrabook replacement with a touch screen that can double up as a tablet and the other a beautiful and restrictive toy. The ipad is pathetic in a work environment and most of the time I cannot do what I want without going through some mission be it a jailbreak or streaming and converting media - why go through all of that Apple BS? I have an iPad 3 from work and I don’t think I’ve used it once except at home to browse the odd web page when my GF is on my PC. Whereas the SP can double up as a Wacom tablet run Office/Adobe CS6 Starcraft II anything the spec allows it to... note this is also the first version of the SP. The SP is simply a Ultrabook with a different form factor - it’s not for everyone just like a Ultrabook or iPad isn’t for everyone.

There now wasn't that better than just facepalming? I GET the Surface Pro just fine. It doesn't mean that I WANT it or think it's going to be a success. It's not for everyone, great, who is it for, who is willing to spend $1000 for the base model with keyboard when they could get a top spec laptop for the same money? We're facing a vanishingly small marketshare here, and the blood is going to be on the wall if it doesn't succeed. This thing has to stand in Incredibles or Dions and a salesman must convince a customer why they should buy it over an iPad or its lower priced SurfaceRT model. It's an impossible pitch.
 
Did you read a word I said - someone buying a Ultrabook or small laptop will not buy an iPad or a Surface RT because it won’t do the job but a SP can.
FYI Ultrabooks go from R7k to R20k so a SP can be viable - I’m not saying you or I should get one.
Example someone who wants to connect say a Wacom to their PC will have to fork out +-20K for a tablet with a screen why not just get a SP and connect another monitor to it and play? You have this flexibility that you don’t get with the Ipad or the RT.

Nonsense. Its competing with the something like the Macbook Air for R13000 (Linky)
In a business context the Surface is quite a bit more practicle, convenient and versatile. Also don't need any silly Mac versions of the software you already use on your workstation PC. Everything can be easily integrated and makes this a dream for IT departments to integrate into existing structures.
