Microsoft failed to offer users a web browser choice

This may have been an issue 10 years ago, but people are so used to installing applications that this has become pointless.

Do they want windows to boot up and say "Hi, have you tried these browsers?". If so... which browsers get preference? Should apple not be forced to do the same on their devices? Why does safari get its button on the menu on iDevices? Shouldn't that be a "choose browser" button?

This is getting a wee bit ridiculous.

Erm... Perhaps 'cos Safari comes pre-installed on Apple machines only. Windows is on just about every other OEM's machine ever, so if you buy an Acer or Asus or Lenovo or Dell or Mecer or Samsung or Sony or, or or... Windows only really offers you the IE option. See the subtle difference?

Hmmmmm... so... Apple OS comes with Safari preinstalled... Windows OS comes with IE. Same difference really. Why the subtle difference then not highlighting Apple's OS not being available on Acer or Asus or Lenovo or Dell or Mecer or Samsung or Sony ... after all... Windows is an Apple Mac option too. Perhaps the focus has shifted from OS to OEM manufacturer ... playing the player not the ball.

Yeah MS had a monopoly on PC's with more than 95% of all computers running Windows, the same cannot be said of Apple.

Dell, mecer all install their own apps as well, why are they excluding the option?

Stupid, click on internet explorer, go to mozilla or whatever and download.

Wow HTF can microsoft expect that level of intelligence.

microsoft were using their dominant market position in the OS market to force a choice on people in the browser market. most here of course will easily just install a browser of choice. but for many that assumption cannot be made.

Perhaps it has. My point, in response to shogun post, was that Apple sell you the hardware as well as the software. Should you choose to buy an Apple product it is not unreasonable to expect Apple to provide you with their own browser. Google have done the same with Chrome on their Chromebooks. Most other manufacturers are reliant on MS for their OS 'tho and I'm not so sure what the real answer is for any of them. MS bundling Firefox or Opera... Don't think so... Lenovo creating their own browser... doubt it. MS have been down this road before 'tho and it didn't end well.

Life's hard for victim souls.

Force you say? Did they block other browsers? I have always been able to install another browser, i have never felt like i am forced to use explorer.

It would be more of a PITA if MS didn't ship with IE, how would you download a better alternative?

Yep, but riddle me this... If you buy a machine with Windows preinstalled or load it on a new machine, what app do you have to run to get to Chrome, Firefox or Opera?

And those that did not install another browser are more than likely pretty comfortable with IE ;) I mean, if they don't know better, what are they missing?

What does it matter that you have to use IE to get anything else? These other browsers seem to want to use Microsoft as a platform to raise awareness of their own products

'Cos you "have" to.

The alternative would be providing a software distribution client, which would be made by Microsoft and be most likely to punt IE over Chrome, Firefox etc.

'Cos you "have" to.

Why is it a problem? Why should Microsoft provide a free distribution platform for other browser manufacturers?

EDIT: Why don't they just, while they are at it, give you a choice of registry editors, file compression packages, etc etc?
