Skype is dead

Software giant Microsoft shut down Skype on Monday, 5 May 2025 and is directing users to switch to its Slack rival, Microsoft Teams.

News that Microsoft was planning to shut down Skype first leaked at the end of February when a member of the XDA Developers community discovered a message to that effect in the code of a preview version of Skype.

The only reason I still use Skype is because one company, that is big, I work with on occasion, have all their account channels on Skype. They will now likely switch to Teams, and they already use Teams amongst other collaborative suites.

The MS 365 free/inclusive minutes to overseas landlines were invaluable.

Skype in it's prime was when I was on a 384k ADSL line joining random skypecasts and chatting to random people around the world about pointless topics.

$8 billion down the drain. Nicely done M$.
Not quite. A lot of the Skype development went into Teams. In fact I don't know why they ran two products at the same time for so long, that was probably the biggest waste.

When I did my PhD my supervisor lived in North America and we had our weekly meetings via Skype. This seemed to work better than any other option at the time on the more limited bandwidth that was available back then. As bandwidth grew the other options started to become more of a thing.
