Microsoft climbs in the computer literacy ring with an educational effort aimed at reaching around 2 million Americans in eight states. This is part of a drive named “Elevate America” whereby millions of Americans will be given free opportunities to get computer literate. America does not have the same free software policies as we enjoy in South African educational facilities and in some other third world countries but this does seem a lot like an effort from Microsoft to create an expanding market for itself.
If it can keep 2 million new computer users Windows oriented it could earn the company around US$160 Million if you take the average cost of a windows installation into account. It might be a little less than that if mass production licensing comes into play. Clever marketing by Microsoft and they can get their community service points up as well. I am getting carried away a bit with the Microsoft bashing. It is not my intention, but one has to look at things from all angles, not so?
