Microsoft Hotfix - Download time-outs with USB Modems

Here is the link to the details of the fix (link above goes directly to the download page): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925681/en-us

When you try to download a file from the Internet by using Windows Internet Explorer in a Windows operating system, the download stops responding and then times out. The problem occurs when you use a USB modem that has a data transfer speed that is faster than or equal to 240 kilobits per second (Kbps).

This is extremely vague and many other issues could produce this kind of problem. It could even be deduced that one should not use Internet Explorer ;)

Vodacom 3G No data over connection after a while

Hi,

Time to vent and ask some serious questions:

Since starting to use my Nokia 6120 classic as a 3g modem, if I use UMTS and my connection starts transmitting over 50kbps, it just stops what I'm doing. Now apart from all the wasted data costs and time reconnecting, here are the things I've noticed.

I'm currently doing a steam upgrade on GPRS which is dead slow, but my download is on 80%

On 3G, I'm lucky if I get to 30%.

If I limit my download speed in Flashget, I have no issues. When my download reaches the 200kbps mark it just stops.

I've spoken to a few friends and they report the same issue. I would highly appreciate if Vodacom can sort this out once and for all.

Hi there. Is your modem set on dual mode? Have you tried setting your modem on "3G Only"? When the modem switches from 3G down to GPRS it can disrupt the connection and stall, even though it shows as still connected.

Ginggs little application...(MDMA) is very very handy.

Hi guys, this hotfix is no longer available for download on the MS support website, is there anywhere else I can get it? Or has it been included in the Windows Updates...?

This will pertain to any download or browsing in any browser where the connection stays connected, but the data throughput just stops. All the issues I've heard of has been with cellphone being used as modems. This has fixed my issue.

Thanks for the feedback funkzar.

Mod Note: Threads merged.
