Hi All

Has anyone here played with Microsoft Lync 2010, if so what FXO/FXS gateways does it support?
Does anyone know if you can get Telkom to port your ‘own’ pots numbers to your own Voip PBX?

Regards

.

We are experimenting with it in-house, but only with SIP. Not really sure if it's worth all the money Microsoft want for it.

Why would you want to attach analogue devices to it?

If I understand correctly, it seems your best bet would be to configure the device to allow analogue calls in from your 'pots' number and do SIP outgoing calls.

If you want to go beyond basic-voip-only and be able to connect off your network with rich service, you need to connect to a multimedia sip peering hub and have your number ported onto a sip/multimedia carrier. I am pretty sure only XConnect offers that service (or, in fact, any of the telco's connected to our Hub).

The problem you might have with Lync and making Outbound calls to a SIP Provider is codecs - Lync only supports RTA or G.711 and the SIP Providers only accept G.729, thus you need a gateway to transcode from RTA/G.711 to G.729.

Typically your requirement will determine the type of gateway you need for your deployment - which Lync features are you interested in, media bypass, SBA, etc.

For a normal Lync deployment with SIP where you just want to break out to you existing Telkom line you can have a look at the Quintum Tenor gateways.

I would however suggest you upgrade your analog line to BRI.

Yes, G.729 is the codec of choice for many telco's (especially the new one's or those with newer equipment). However, our calls on G.711 do terminate effectively with the large SA operators. In addition, G.711 is still strong in the US and parts of Europe.

G.729 is therefore only an immediate consideration for connecting to smaller voip players (who may not support G.711), but is far better for bandwidth conservation and essential for full-SIP incoming calls.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the input - much respect.
