But the ... software giant has been reluctant to undermine its other lucrative franchise, its PC operating software.

Or, they know that people will now start comparing ... erm, pears with pears. More people will now start comparing Office for tablets with other offers on the market and then realise that they can get products with all the necessary functionality for much less. And then they might transfer that thinking back to their desktop/laptop computers. Microsoft is in a corner here. They might actually, at long last, be forced to compete on value for money.
