Microsoft Patches Linux; Linus Responds

i love the way both the author and linus see this

If the LINUX people were smart THEY WOULD NOT ALLOW THIS!!

Microsoft has gotton VERY INTRUSIVE,do the linux people really want thier OS to be corrupted?? (Vista and Win 7 have NO PRIVACY AT ALL (XP has some privacy (The older OS's are MUCH better as far as privacy!)))

Leave linux alone!! (Much better than the newer OS's from ms!!)

How can they corrupt Linux if the code MUST be GPL?

Everyone and his mother has the right to review the code and change it how they see fit.

Linus also mentions that this code does nothing for Linux itself, it is a MS patch to make sure Linux runs better in windows based VM's. And if it seems to be problematic then they can always chuck it out at a latter stage or just offer it as a patch and not even include it into the main kernel tree.

I too do not trust MS one bit, but until they have proof that MS is trying to corrupt the kernel I say it is fair game for Open Source?

They can't corrupt the kernel. They've submitted driver code which has nothing to do with the core of the kernel.

Anyway it's up to the distro's to include the code or not. And that's after it's been approved. If it turns out to be dodgy they can exclude the code.

Microsoft has no control over this, other than to submit the code and hope for the best. Without it they'll seriously loose ground in the virtulisation market, it's not in their best intrest to break anything...

Why do ppl just jump to the daft conclusion that MS are trying to corrupt the kernel or whatever...

They code is there for everyone to see, so ppl would be able to see what MS are up to.

Guess it would just be ppl posting knee jerk reactions to anything Microsoft and not actually reading/understanding the article.

The only newsworthy fact that is being buried under the noise is that MS had no choice but to release the code. Their licensing model of mixing open and closed source components was in violation of the GPL license.

It is this kind of deception that has earned MS its well-deserved reputation.

What a terrible post. I guess you dont know how FOSS works to make such a silly statement. I hope MS releases MORE code for Linux... thats the blerry point.

Linux people are smart which is why they would never say something like you just said.

Well i dont dont wanna see LINUX end up like the newer M$ os's!!

Comprehension 101:

Read and understand the topic at hand. If you still are not able to mentally ingest the information, read it again, slowly this time, and take the time to think about what you have read. Then formulate a reply which is consistent to the topic at hand.

---

Over exaggeration:

It is bad, especially when comprehension fails. The above quote is over exaggerated and in all honesty a pointless statement if you regard the facts of what Linux is, how it is developed and what this article is relating to.

---

In such ways trolls are born.

Possible that Microsoft used GPL'd code in their drivers somewhere, so had to release them under GPL instead of rewriting 20k lines of code when windows 7 is so close

I agree with what Linus Torvaldus said in this article, that he wouldn't really use the code, and will trust the maintainers to look at it. And in any case it's up to the various distro's to decide whether to include it or not.

I wouldn't have any use for it either, so if it's included in Ubuntu, yay!. I am sure there is quite a bit of code included in the kernel that I never use.

In any case I have recently decided to take the approach, of while I do not like MS products for the most part, that I will leave them be, provided their supporters do the same. Of course, I will always promote FOSS over MS and the like any day, but ultimately it's up to the individual to decide.

I don't see what the fuss is about. It's drivers that will allow Linux to run well on Microsoft's virtualisation apps. Clearly they're trying to gain some market share and that's to be expected - none of the commercial virtualisation even use Windows as the base, let alone their virtualisation infrastructure. And given that there are some excellent free options, I don't see this becoming a problem.

For the code to go into the kernel, it's going to have to be GPL anyway, which means it's out of Microsoft's control.
