Microsoft is releasing a security update for Internet Explorer that closes a gap that allowed attackers to take complete control of a computer. It also issued the update to Windows XP users, despite dropping support for the older operating system last month.

The update will go live at 10 a.m. Pacific time Thursday.

Adrienne Hall, general manager of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing, said in a statement that the company decided to fix the problem quickly for all customers, saying it takes the security of its products "incredibly seriously."

Microsoft reported the problem Saturday, saying it was aware of "limited, targeted attacks" and that the vulnerability affected Internet Explorer versions 6 through 11

The company said users with automatic updates enabled don't need to take any action.

After all the the warnings I switched on my seldom used PC and find out it's running XP

It was switched off immediately and hasn't been used since. Shall i update XP now?

Sorry for stupid question.

Yes, but the update may only come out by next Wednesday.
Keep checking once a day.
You can use it if you unplug it from the Internet.

XP itself receives no more updates.

You can just use Opera, Chrome, Firefox or any of the other non-IE based browsers.

So MS will again support XP or not? Because so far, with one exception, other things will not be patched. Or has MS made an about turn on their decision to drop all support, including security patches for XP?

There are of course other vulnerabilities than this one.

Just read the articles, Dude. They are just releasing this one patch.
That's why I told him to check every day... so he could get the patch.
Nobody is saying that XP is going to be getting regular patches again.

Sure. My statement reinforced that. XP is no longer protected per se, this one patch is just an exception. Most people now recommend dropping XP.
