Microsoft Security Essentials has done it again. For the second time since its inception, the free antivirus software from Microsoft finds itself without German security and antivirus research outfit AV-TEST’s seal of approval, having failed in the latest of the firm’s bimonthly certification tests.

To add insult to injury, MSE was the only antivirus to not make the cut, even though the German firm put as many as 24 products through their paces in its latest test, for which it used a Windows 7-based testbed — AV-TEST alternates between Windows 7 and Windows XP.

The firm awards its “AV-TEST Certified” seal of approval based on three parameters:"protection", "repair" and "usability". There are a maximum of six points up for grabs for each attribute. In order for a home-use antivirus product to be certified, a minimum of 11 points are required. Security Essentials managed 10.5, missing out by a whisker. MSE got 1.5 points for protection (the lowest among all products), 3.5 points for repair and 5.5 for usability.

Here’s how the rest of them fared:

The thing you have to remember about these European guys is that they want to punish Microsoft at every turn of the corner for what they perceive as monopolistic behaviour. So yeah... this does not surprise me in the least.

Nothing, until the day MSE lets me down. I do use Malwarebytes as added protection while on the web.

This is exactly what i was thinking....

Any one know were i can download viruses on purpose to test on a VM comparing some anti viruses, and I dont mean 'viruses' that bring up a message saying hello world or cr@p like that...I mean full PC meltdown viruses.

For the guys happy with it has it actually detected anything? Reason I ask is the only "virusses" I've encountered in the last few years are those usb autorun types which are easily avoided/removed without any av product.

Been running MS Security essentials for a couple years now....not one infection, I'm not much a tester but Security essentials never let me down since I started using it.

I'm not much a MS fan boy either...running Linux Mint as my main OS and Win7 as a secondary OS (for wife and certain applications and games).

On the weekend I swallowed my pride and went back to using AVG after a three month flirtation with MSSE...my computer got infected last week, probably from all the torrents I download, and while MSSE scanned it, it could not resolve the issue so I was left with no choice but to pay, and I've got to say it works, and I haven't had any issues since.
