Microsoft’s Surface tablets have yet to make any profit as sales have been eclipsed by advertising costs

Erm, theirs. Just saying that noone expected these to sell alot. There are probably at least 5 posts I've made about how it won't sell lots from months ago.

For a new player to succeed in the short to medium term it needs something unique that the market must want/need. Else why go for the unknown quantity? Why go for Windows RT when the well established (app rich) iPad and Android tablets lack nothing that Windows RT offers? MS just cannot get their mobile business right. They stagger from one disappointing offering to the next.

Perhaps it would be different if they released it to more markets. Personally I wanted to try out Surface RT.
