Microsoft talked with Nokia about buying devices unit: report

I'm actually very impressed with my wife's Lumia.
 
The Journal reported that “advanced discussions” on a deal happened as recently as this month, according to unnamed sources it said were familiar with the matter. Microsoft rejected a deal because of price and Nokia’s loss of market share to rising Asian competitors, the report said.

Yeah Microsoft, aren't Nokia running that mediocre Windows Phone OS on their phones at the moment? Ever thought that that could be why they are losing market share?
 
Here is an opinion on the matter - taken from an article in response to speculation that Huawei want to buy Nokia:

In the coming days, I expect Nokia to issue a statement saying that it is not up for sale. At this point, even Microsoft wouldn't be allowed to buy Nokia because the company isn't burning cash like it was last year (because it was able to cut a lot of costs through its transformation). At the moment, Nokia's balance sheet looks healthy and its survival is no longer in question. If Nokia went back to cash burning and the company's survivability were in question, Microsoft would probably bail out its little buddy because Nokia is crucial for the Windows Phone project, as it sells 83% of all Windows Phone devices sold globally.

So, the conclusion is that, if Nokia actually decides to sell, Microsoft would be first in line.

I can see how being bought by Huawei would ruin Nokia's reputation. Being bought by Microsoft would be a great idea but this is not going to happen anytime soon, if at all.

I think that the opposite would actually be better for Nokia, and Huawei. Microsoft owning a once prestigious device manufacturer, to use as a shipping mechanism for Windows Phone, is a bad idea all round...

Unless they do it Google Style, Google Owns Motorola yet does not interfere with the way its run. I can see Microsoft doing the same with Nokia, esp now after they claimed the end of life for Symbian as well. In fact I thought Microsoft would have bought it already.
 
With the current MS/Nokia contract - does it actually prevent Nokia from running anything else?
And for how long?

It would be even better if Microsoft integrates with Nokia (buys Nokia) and it runs the way Apple operates, while letting other OEMs also use Windows Phone and Windows.
