Nokia and Microsoft have always dreamed big – we dreamed of putting a computer on every desk, and a mobile phone in every pocket, and we’ve come a long way toward realizing those dreams.

Today marks a moment of reinvention.

Nokia has an identity spanning 150 years of heritage, innovation, excellence, and change which began and will continue in Finland and around the world. From humble beginnings as a paper mill factory, to manufacturing rubber boots and car tires, and then to mobile phones, reinvention is in Nokia’s blood.

Nokia will now write its next chapter, focused on enabling mobility through its leadership in networking, mapping & location, and advanced technologies.

For Microsoft as well, today is a bold step into the future, a huge leap forward on our journey of creating a family of devices and services that delight people and empower businesses of all sizes.

Our partnership over the past two and a half years, which combined our respective strengths to build a new global mobile ecosystem, has created incredible results: award-winning phones and amazing services that have made Nokia Windows Phones the fastest-growing smartphones in the world.

Building on this successful partnership, we announced some important news today: an agreement for Microsoft to purchase Nokia’s Devices & Services business, to deliver more choices, faster innovation, and even more exciting devices and services to our customers.

Today’s agreement will accelerate the momentum of Nokia’s devices and services, bringing the world’s most innovative smartphones to more people, while continuing to connect the next billion people with Nokia’s mobile phone portfolio.

With the commitment and resources of Microsoft to take Nokia’s devices and services forward, we can now realize the full potential of the Windows ecosystem, providing the most compelling experiences for people at home, at work and everywhere in between.

We will continue to build the mobile phones you’ve come to love, while investing in the future – new phones and services that combine the best of Microsoft and the best of Nokia.

Nokia and Microsoft are committed to the next chapter.

Together, we will redefine the boundaries of mobility.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia shareholders, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Read more here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/press/2013/Sep13/09-02AnnouncementPR.aspx

Wonder what this means for Windows phone. Personally, I was hoping for something like this. Might be a good thing for Nokia as well? This only points to the fact hat Nokia was on route to closing down.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Nokia has really been driving wp lately and adding all sorts of extras (Amber) that Microsoft left out. I just hope Nokia doesn't slow down with there push for new features. Hopefully they keep the brand name as is. A 'Nokia' phone holds more brand recognition than a 'Microsoft' one would.

We all knew this was coming, Hell I said it a million times on this very forum...

TO be honest I was expecting it to come a lot sooner.

Edit: I guess this comes in just ther right time to make Elop CEO of Microsoft?

Brilliant move is it not, Send in Elop to de-value Nokia so its worth nothing to anyone but Microsoft. Microsoft buy's up stake and in return makes Elop new CEO. Timing is perfect for Ballmer's retirement no? (2014 approval vs Ballmer's step-down in 2014)

Yep, was indeed a matter of time. Elop was truly a trojan horse sent to weaken Nokia, MS are now buying them and licensing their IP at a lower cost than they bought Skype for.

There will never be another Nokia smartphone
The Nokia brand name, one of the most storied marks in mobile, will never grace another smartphone.

Under the terms of Microsoft's $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division, the "Asha" and "Lumia" trademarks will transfer to Redmond, but the "Nokia" mark will remain property of the Finnish company, and may only be used on featurephones under a 10-year license agreement. That means any future Windows Phones built by the newest division of Microsoft will be Microsoft- branded — and that Nokia has said its goodbyes to a smartphone market it once helped to create.

I'm intrigued to know how this accelerates anything more than their partnership with Nokia already was accomplishing.

This is going to be interesting.... the easiest way for MS to gain market share is to come in cheaper. Which they really havent done.

I want to know how this is going to accelerate HTC's efforts with Android. If they couldn't sell more phones than Nokia or Samsung, they haven't a hope in hell of running up against Microsoft, especially when they're going to play favourites now. I'm definitely looking at an Xperia now more than ever.

For all those among us that have dreamed of a Nokia Android phone, perk up. The marriage of Nokia’s legendary build quality and the best mobile operating system in the world would be a truly amazing thing, and now, it’s looking more likely than ever.

In the very same time frame that Nokia essentially sold itself to Microsoft, former Asia-Pacific CEO Thomas Zilliacus has founded a company called Newkia, and he has publicly stated that he’ll be poaching talent from Nokia to build what so many of us have been waiting for so long.
