Microsoft to reduce lag by predicting your gameplay

"future input prediction" Not even a big gamer but knows this will piss so many people off.

The chance of you correctly guessing it is near nothing, so don't waste resources on this.

You underestimate how predictable people are and just how powerful software can be.

If I want a 1st person shooter that predicts my movement and almost do everything for me, I might as well watch a Rambo movie.

I don't think you are understanding what this technology does. When a person is walking forward in a FPS the next frame is determined in that forward movement and the probability of your frame thereafter being the next forward frame is pretty high - as is the frame after that and thereafter. This system polls in probable frames that run in sequence which reduces lag.

So the game doesn't have to predict you movements beyond the immediate next ones ahead of you

Don't understand why people would be against this.

gaming is too unpredictable.

No it's not. Next time your character runs towards a building corner, a barrel drum or a team mate take note of how predictable that almost straight line you were running in was.

You should think of this "predictability" in the context of seconds rather than an extended period of time. They only need to predict a couple of frames in advance at a time for this to work.

I will say it again, it is too unpredictable.
I try to change my style of gameplay quite often to confuse opponents.

So, are the naysayers also against predictive browser caching? As I understand Microsoft's software will pre-download the expected move and the results of that move will be displayed should the player make the predicted move, OTOH should the move being made be different from that predicted, the actual move would apply. The former method would reduce lag.

you are assuming that the structure is predicting intent and movements further into the future than is necessary for this to make an improvement. If you are moving forward the sequence of frames are predictable - they are the frames showing what happens as you move forward
