I received this in an email today:

TRICK #1
An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the
computer which can be named as 'CON'.
This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable. ..
At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened!
TRY IT NOW ,IT WILL NOT CREATE ' CON ' FOLDER

For those of you using Windows, do the following:

1.) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type 'Bush hid the facts' (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want.
4.) Close it, and re-open it.

is it just a really weird bug? Confused?

Microsoft crazy facts

This is something pretty cool and neat...and unbelievable. .. At Microsoft
the whole Team

couldn't answer why this happened!

It was discovered by a Brazilian. Try it out yourself...

Open Microsoft Word and type

=rand (200, 99)

And then press ENTER

I tested the above and nothing out of the ordinary happens with two. I'm using Vista.

So what do you guys get?

Weird stuff happens here on XP. lol

The "Bush hid the facts' one doesnt work for me using notepad in Vista so I have no idea what it does. The others work...

Noways...all 3 work.

Discovered something else too:

The Bush one changes it to a bunch of blocks like when it can't display a character, but if I copy it to FF it gives this: 畂桳栠摩琠敨映捡獴. Anybody here read chinese/japanese?

Nope, Bush one still doesnt work. I opened notepad, typed in Bush hid the facts - saved it, re-opened it - it does nothing unusual. The text is still there and the file-name remains the same...

The =rand tricks pumps out different text depending on the service pack version or Office version.

SP2 = Various bit & pieces from the Word interface (office 2007)
sp3 = The brown fox jumps etc. (office 2003)

Trick 2 and 3 are easter eggs

Trick 1 goes back to the dos days CON is short for CONSOLE

ie. In Windows Command Prompt type :
copy con test.txt
type some rubbish
press F6 then enter

It would've created a file called test.txt with the stuff u typed

mine is:
XP sp2, office2000 (I know !! :o ) = The brown fox jumps etc.
Also the numbers (rows, columns) (number of times before carriage return :) )

Some more info after some trial & error:

The first parameter controls the number of paragraphs into which it is split.

The second parameter controls the length. 9 = one repetition. 18=two repetitions.

Hence
=rand(1,9)
appears to be ideal.

The CON one still works -

open a cmd prompt and then copy filename.txt con where filename.txt is a text file - the file is copied to the cmd console.

One wonders why such anachronisms are retained.
