Hi
I am having trouble getting VPN going to Microsoft SBS 2003 thats behind a Telkom Mega 100WR router.
I have set up the router to enable RDP (port forwarding) to the server and that works. For the VPN I have enabled PPTP (which opens GRE as well). I am however unable to connect - comes up with "verifying username and password".

If I try to conncect using a local machine I can make a connection.

Would the ISP (Mweb) I'm using maybe block GRE?

Any help would be appreciated.

what VPN software r u using?
whats the OS of the machine ur connecting from?
whats the type of security setup on the server VPN, DES,3DES etc?

Are you sure the GRE traffic is being forwarded? Getting stuck on the "verifying username and password" is a typical symptom of not forwarding GRE traffic.

Has anybody found a solution for this problem. I've also enabled port forwarding (incl. GRE) and even placed the vpn hosting PC within the DMZ. From within the network I can connect via VPN, but from outside it gets stuck at "verifying user name and password"

(using Windows XP SP2 built in VPN server and trying to connect with another XP pc)

Ideas?

Assume you've forwarded TCP 1723 as well as GRE?

If all else fails load WireShark onto the SBS2003 server. Do a trace from the local LAN, then do one coming in through the router. Should be able to pick up the discrepancy then.

Hi Roman,

Thanks for the reply. Both forwarded, but to a normal XP pro installation using the built in VPN server through PPTP. I'm downloading WireShark now to check the comms. Will let you know what I get.

Same problem

I used to have a Business DSL from IS and the VPN worked perfectly - Windows 2003 SBS and Windows XP client.

The client and server stayed exactly the same, and I turned on PPTP forwarding on the router (Which specifies that GRE is also opened), but I get the same problem as you.

I can only assume that the problem lies with the router. Because nothing else changed from the previous setup.

Under active directory -> users -> , tick the box that says "dial in".Grant permissions

Just to resurrect this thread... I'm also using the Mega 100 WR router.

I could do VPN connections through the router without any hassles. But when I upgraded the firmware to version 99.70.2n it was a gonner. No amount of tweaking will allow a VPN connection to a Microsoft server to be established.

The firmware upgrade is not reversible and I doubt we're going to see another upgrade to fix this...

Bummer. Have to get a new router I guess?
