Microsoft's challenges in 2006

Article doesn't mention the constant eroding of customer base to Apple (And in smaller numbers, to Linux as well).

MS need Vista to be a big sucess.
As for the xbox 360, I think it will be huge. As for Google, I dont think they can take them on. But that doesn't really affect MS in the short term

As long as all the OEM suppliers go with Windows and games are made for Windows only, Microsoft will always have a dominant share in the market.

I think the Xbox 360 is going to be bigger in Europe & US than the PS3 while the PS3 will dominate in Japan.

Dominic Rooney : Not true. Read Joel On Software for more detail, but it basically comes down to that the world today is not the world of 1995.

Back then to get the whole world to switch to Windows95 waas easy, as there were more new PC's sold every year than their were in existance. This phenomonon continued into 1998. Since then, their has been an ever decreasing amount of PC's sold. MS hasn't even managed to get Windows XP onto most PC's (Windows 98 still has a massive marketshare). And the situation has gotten even worse since 2001 (?) when XP was released

I'm still not convinced that M$ should worry to much about a few % points. They still have about 90% of the world PC market and even if it goes down to 85%, it's still not a major issue. (even though a few % points are quite alot of PC's).

Macs are still mostly home to people who work in graphic design while Linux is just not for the Average Joe on the street.

Sadly, I gotta agree with Dominc

Not that I'd like to believe it. If anything, we may see MS switching more to open technologies from the ethical point of view (not that there's nothing in it for them). But yeah - the tactic has always been agressive marketing and oem strategies. In the server market I am quite sure they will take a knock... even from Apple believe it or not. But then I am probably one of those investors you won't want to take a hot tip from ;-)

hrm...once again, read the Joel On Software article. Microsofts biggest challenge for many years now has been converting it's own users to newer versions. This has been almost the biggest driving point for Vista. And MS need to do this to protect their future growth
