I just thought I would drop a note about my experience with a Microwave link on our MPLS network because it is still a relativity "new" technology when it comes to consumer usage instead of the ISP using it solely for themselves. I won't be mentioning any service providers so that this post doesn't get misconstrued as an advert.
One of our branches is in a remote area, too far from the Telkom exchange to get any digital services, so we opted for a long-haul wifi connection. It worked well, but wasn't very stable - power outages, affected by weather etc. Our SP then launched Microwave links to the consumer. We luckily had LOS to the nearest tower and installed a 2mb link. It's the best thing we've done for this branch. We are now able to have stable comms and can also use VOIP over this connection. The link is very stable, fast (similar to fibre) and is not affected by weather.
After using this connection for just over 8 months now, we have decided to ditch our ADSL and Diginet links in two other branches. It's slightly more expensive than diginet, but the benefits out-weigh it.
