Microwave systems making a comeback

do you know how many microwaves the Mobile Operators have in their network. Loads

"Old Days "

Yep, they are all over the place!!! Here's some reading for those curious souls!! http://sysdoc.doors.ch/ERICSSON/minilink_1105066.pdf

Maybe he was referring to using them for long distance backhaul links as in the "old" days?

What "old days" ? -- far as I know they are still being used -- for what you mention. ( But not to the individual subscriber / customer )

For those peeps in the rural areas one of these links might help them to get Internet. ( Not the failed system they are using at the moment )

I ponder on whether any rural ISP out there is using this technology ????

Many of the long haul (national) links have been switched off and recovered. There are very few left.

PS; Your link not working for me

Here is the Ericsson page at the Ericsson website -- there are a LOT of Mini-Link models .......

Dude the operators will keep the microwave equipment in their stores as they always need them. The units are very pricey, looking at thousands of dollars for one unit. One hop would require 2 units, frequency spectrum for the link and a specialised engineer to set it up. So even second hand you are looking at massive costs.

Also, that product sheet in the link is very dated by the looks of things....

I work for Ericsson, I know :)

Ok so basically if this kit is so expensive ( thousands of dollars ) and damn difficult to set up etc etc , then the thrust of the original article on the main page is next to hopeless.

ie -- this technology is not going to come to the rescue of the poor rural dwellers?

How specialised does the "engineer" need to be ?

Agree the article is dated -- where can I find a user / installation manual ?

I would like to see for myself how difficult it is to set this up .......

Raising a point, where all these disused towers should be available for rental/purchase

TotalFM

Hi kilos,
This I do remember!!
See here and click all over the place! :

-> select Western Cape for the Garden Route properties in your area.

Sounds like code to me ......... ??????

Had a look -- what do these people actually do ? ( Is this a new radio station )

Website prattles a lot -- but says nothing -- I have NO idea what it is about :)

What I do understand ..........
is
that IF Telkom have taken a lot of infrastructure and placed it in mothballs --
or
palmed it off --
then
HOW can anyone take their "social-responsibility" ie getting broadband to the rural areas seriously ??????

Anyone ...... ????????

That website was in reply to kilos' specific question about what happens to the properties that Telkom no longer require and put up for sale.

With regard to your question: they won't sell any tower that is currently carrying traffic or where it is planned to be used in the future for either a Telkom wireless system or an 8ta base station.

In terms of social responsibility it is not only Telkom but all the operators' "social responsibility". They are all forced to contribute to the USAL fund that ICASA administers. it is not a pretty picture.

:D

If I know kilos -- and his question -- I think that he was wanting to know about actual TOWERS -- which he has plans for ......... ;)

Not so kilos

Can someone co-install on a Telkom "tower" ?

OK let us leave the towers for a mo -- what about the removable equipment which was -- // switched off & recovered // ?????

WHAT is that doing now ?????

Interesting.

This is a SA company that does alot of the microwafe links for MTN Business. A lot of companies have this as a backup solution.

Thanks

interesting site

New article on MyBB from "His Highness Junior"

HHhhmmm

PS; Their use of the term "MetroNet" is confusing -- I always thought that MetroNet referred to a specific type of Fibre network rather than wireless ?

If towers were for sale they would also be listed there.

Yes. Contact TFMC - it's on that link somewhere!

I bet that the manufacturers no longer support that equipment, so it would hopefully be mothballed and kept for spares.
