Perhaps this question belongs in the general Tech section ???

However , I was following this article ......... /

The iBurst wireless network consists of more than 250 towers countrywide serving around 80,000 subscribers.
These towers are interconnected via carrier-grade microwave rings (for redundancy)
and the same microwave backhaul network is also used to provide backhaul services to around 300 business clients.

So perhaps one of the tech people can help me -- If you do TELKOM microwave towers feel free to jump in as well.

Basically .........

One is in the country on top of a hill with a good all round view.

There is no service of any sort -- perhaps just dial up.

However , far away in the valley is a town with a Telkom exchange and with a tower and dishes and perhaps some other stuff.

  • What is the transmission distance of a "carrier grade" dedicated microwave link ?
  • What is the throughput on such a link ?
  • What is the cost of the equipment ?
  • What sort of "headend" equipment do you use to connect it all up ? ( Wired and Unwired LAN on my side )
  • Can I go to somebody and say I need a microwave link ? ( Not talking about WiFi or WiMax -- but the real big daddy stuff )
  • What sort of license do I need ?

  • Anything else I need to know

Please guys I need this info for some research ( Stru my Boss )

Thanks

Thanks

Ericsson -- / -- Marconi

I thought that these were seperate companies

Swedes and Italians ( British )

Anyway -- presently looking at that site -- thanks.

I am under the impression that Ericsson have a local office.

They seem to supply most of the high end broadband equipment in SA.

you can get cheaper chinese links, but 1 big problem= icasa. you need a license for the links, repeaters etc.

and as you know, icasa is not pick and pay, where you pick and pay, icasa = you wait and wait long.

1= up till 50km. good line of site. small one gives 1 2mb link.
you hire space on the tower.
you must then get a repeater.
you need a power supply and standby batteries [50volt]
after you get your license from icasa for the link and broadcast rights you go to the supplier and they will supply according to license. normally the firmware are written for your license, ie the output power, frequency , bandwidth.
I know of people who buy old systems for cheap and use that.

Nup -- far as I understand Municipalities get special licence and dispensation

"cash and carry" Ratepayers cash -- I carry :D

Not going to apply for a licence myself ;)
