Mid-range smartphone showdown - South African pricing

Many consumers therefore prefer*mid-range smartphones to flagship devices, especially as the hardware and designs offered by cheaper alternatives continue to improve.

Modern mid-range devices can offer impressive capabilities, from Full HD displays with bezel-less designs to impressive RAM and storage specifications.
 
Except the Nokia 8 isn't a mid-range phone, it just happens to be priced as such :-). You've got a bunch of Kirin 659, Snapdragon 600 series and Exynos 7888 vs the Snapdragon 835, it's really priced well and shoots above anything Samsung offers at that price point by the looks of it.
 
While the Nokia 8 looks fantastic for the price, the problem is its using a LG Panel ,the LG Panels suffers from the worst screen retention Ive ever used, the LG G5 mine is so bad that anything white thats on the screen for 60 seconds stay there for a whopping 5+ minutes :/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Nokia/comments/8kav3p/screen_retention_issues_with_the_nokia_8/

So that phone is out of the question, I would rather have a 1080p screen that doesnt use "quantum dot" AKA "Screen retention from hell, why is this even allowed" so looking at the list the P Smart is the next best thing :)

Plus, it's on Android 8.1 already.

I've got the Nokia and there is no screen burn in compared to the LG G4.
 
Mid-range phones definitely make the most sense in my opinion.
Interesting that P20Lite is listed at R5299 but Vodacom & MTN are selling at R5,999
Are they ripping consumers off due to popularity of the device?

That's probably TakeAlot pricing, but I gone mine at a vodacom shop for R5499, klein blue nogal.

The R5299 comes from MyBroadband article, so assume it is RRP quoted by manufacturers.
We always get ripped off by stores here.
