The DA's Midvaal mayor Timothy Nast has resigned, the party said on Friday.

Democratic Alliance MP James Selfe said Nast's last day would be next Wednesday.

"He takes up his new position at the Gauteng Planning Commission (GPC) from August 1," said Selfe.

The GPC is responsible for long-term city-region planning and performance monitoring and evaluation for the province. All infrastructure and development planning is co-ordinated centrally by the GPC on behalf of Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, a member of the African National Congress.

Selfe said the move would not affect Nast's affiliation with the DA.

"He made it very clear that he remained an enthusiastic and loyal member of the DA."

Nast, 32, became mayor of the Midvaal in 2009. He was re-elected to the post in 2011. The Midvaal municipality has won several awards under his leadership and has obtained nine unqualified audits.

The interesting question is now: who succeeds him? Currently, MMC Clifford Hartman has been acting Mayor so far, but I have heard that Nast himself is pushing for MMC Bongani Baloyi to be his replacement. This is of course just unconfirmed "gossip", but take it as you will.
