Im considering migrating over from MWEB to cool ideas but unsure of any hidden costs, procedures etc. I'm currently on the uncapped 10/5 fibre through openserve and want to give cool ideas a try as they state to have unshaped and uncapped, although the they don't mention their fair usage policy.

I also saw that cool ideas has 2 options on their packages where they give you different prices based on whether you want a data only package (where we manage our own line) and a normal residential package where the line rental is included.

Can a line be rented separately to the fibre? First time I see something like that. I thought that wasn't possible with fibre?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Cool Ideas has no Fair Usage Policy, that is the reason everybody is so happy with them.

I can very easily hit over 1tb in data in a month, and there is no slow down in my line.

There is no shaping and no Throttling whatsoever.

Next, since Openserve is basically Telkom, it works the same on their network as on ADSL, where you can have your line rental through for example MWEB, but sign into Cool Ideas using the settings on the router.

Speak to @PBCool, he will be able to elaborate a lot more on these issues.

Awesome, thanks for that insight. I'm very keen to switch over after reading that. @PBCool could you perhaps assist me in identifying what the cost would be to just rent the openserve line from MWEB? Then I could just cancel the data package with them and jump over to cool ideas. I presume that way there wouldn't be any connection fees as nothing was disconnected?

No idea to be honest, does Mweb offer a line only service?

I was hoping you might know. Guess I will need to phone them and find out. Worst case scenario is they don't, what costs would I have in order to join cool ideas i.e. connection fee?

There is no fee to move :)

So its as simple as cancelling with Mweb, and joining cool ideas? I can swear I have read that when changing Fibre ISP there is a connection fee due to the previous isp cancelling and the new isp having to activate?

You need to cancel with Mweb and request they release your line into the "holding pool", you also need to get your "B" number from them to give to us. Once they have released the line into the holding pool, we then claim it.

That's the process in theory if everything goes to plan :).

ok, so I called them and they have advised me I have to give a calendar months notice i.e. it can only cancel 31 October, so I have given them notice already. Could I ask if it would be possible to get someone from the sales division to give me a call to get set up for 1 November @PBCool ? Or can I only do that on the 1st of November?
It would be greatly appreciated.

Drop a mail to [email protected] stating the above and they will go through the process to prepare for the move.

You may want to have a backup connection (LTE maybe?) just in case. I tried this trick with my ADSL line a couple of years ago and it was a couple of days after the end of the month before the new ISP was able to pick it up.

Not sure where the problem was though, whether it was OpenServe or Axxess (was also switching away from MWeb).

Thanks for the headsup

@PBCool I've got a query hopefully you can answer. I'm migrating over to cool ideas effective 1 October, and I noticed you give 2 types of packages, namely Residential and data only.

I was never aware we were able to pay the fibre line rental to openserve directly. Do you know the prices or do they vary based on what line speed you request from them? I'm looking to see what will work out more affordable, to take out a residential package which includes the line rental, or data only package and manage to line rental myself...

Not sure if you can get the line only from Openserve, we offer data only for customers that want to use multiple ISPs. Its more cost effective as a bundle.
