Hello Folks,
I'm certainly in the category of Noob tinkerer. Managed to set up our small office network ok with Peplink Balance and multiple Pepwave wireless access points. But I have zero networking experience so really just muddle through.
At home I am trying to set up a Mikrotik now to better control some wireless cameras (damn break-ins). I am using the Picostation M2 in bridge mode to connect to the cameras. Setup I am intending will be:
TP link 8840 ADSL bridge mode ---> Mikrotik (Ether1) ---> Picostation M2 bridge mode (Ether2) ---> cameras ; TP link Ethernet over Powerline WPA281 (Ether3) ---> clients (PCs, laptops etc).
I managed to change the Mikrotik default LAN address to 192.168.1.1 (cameras are already set up on this LAN so easier not to change all of them) and get the DHCP server working to assign IPs in the right pool. Haven't tried it yet with the Picostation or WPA281. I'm struggling a bit with the 8840 correct setup. I am following this link:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/How_to_Connect_your_Home_Network_to_xDSL_Line
Very basic question but can someone please clarify what I actually need to do to accomplish this:
Make your MikroTik router with two Ethernet NICs, one for the Home DSL modem, one for your home network. See instructions in the Basic Setup Guide!
Secondly I have PMed Roman to ask for his instructions for setting it up rather in "one-arm" mode. I'm guessing in which the router handles the PPPoE sessions rather than the 8840.
I certainly feel slightly out of my (very shallow) depth with the Mikrotik router so far! Hopefully will learn without too much pain.
