Mikrotik router "loses" DNS?

I have a Mikrotik router (Can't remember which one) connected to another one that is used for my fiber setup at home. I'm not allowed to change DNS settings etc. on the one connected to the internet, so I just run a cable from that one to the Mikrotik I can control (into it's WAN port) and run it on an entirely different IP range, where I can then setup DNS to be dished out by the DHCP on it.

My wireless AP is connected to the fiber-provider's Mikrotik.

Everything is fine and dandy, but sometimes DNS just wigs out and fails to resolve ANY queries on the 2nd Mikrotik I have access to while my wireless is chugging away nicely (proving the internet didn't go down). A few minutes later, it starts working again.

Last night it stopped working even for pinging IP's (no DNS resolution required), so when I rebooted the Mikrotik, everything started working fine again.

Is there something I'm missing? I can't see any error logs, or that the lease time on the DHCP were affected (I've setup static IP to my PC and Media center)

Or do I just cron a reboot every 24 hours on it and forget that the issue ever existed (provided it works to solve the issue)

if you do an ipconfig /all on your windows PC's, what is the DNS IP in there? (in other words, where is your current DNS setup pointing to?)

Have you tried to put a manual DNS like 8.8.8.8 (for google DNS)?

You can also try to obtain DNS from the first Mikrotik instead of the second one. Assuming you set up a DHCP server on the second one, you can change the DHCP settings so that the DNS entry handed out will be either an external DNS server or the first Mikrotik device.

can even point the dns on 2nd mikrotik to the 1st mikrotik IP
 
Thanks for the replies. Will do a router update and see.

When I do ipconfig /all, it gives me the DNS server I put in there, I've also switched to manually putting it in and had the same behavior.

Could it be that the 2nd Mikrotik somehow loses connection on the WAN port to the 1st Mikrotik? ... that can't explain why I'm able to ping outside IP's directly though, that's why I suspected the DNS in the first place, since it won't resolve to an IP, but IP's are available to ping/access.

The 1st Mikrotik hands out the DNS of the ISP. I'm using Unotelly. I also have to block 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 so that Netflix doesn't do it's region checking on my Roku and locks me into S.A only.

The ISP refuses to just add these rules to the firewall of the router and change the DNS, citing that my internet might be slower or some such crap, pretending like a bit of DNS delay will be the end of the world for me and they don't want me moaning about slow internet. I told them that it would be negligible on my side especially since I'm the one requesting it, not to mention the fact the DNS servers are locally hosted at the DC they terminate in anyway.

Another option is :

Do your mikrotik have an USB port for 3G devices?

If so, then why not get an axxess (or afrihost) SIM, then add a compatible 3G dongle (or router) to your mikrotik, and add a firewall rule that all DNS queries go through the SIM? Then you can use any DNS server you want to use without being hampered by your ISP....
