Hi All

Use this thread to post regarding your experiences with your Mikrotik and any external hardware (such as 3G/LTE routers) so that others can also know what work and what not.

I tried both a Huawei E1820 and E220 (not simultaneously) but got intermittent throughput, not usable under current conditions.

As the iBurst desktop router is working 100â„…, and my smartphone says cellc is fine, then all I can think of is that my current ppp setup is not up to scratch.

Will investigate further at a later stage, and report back.

Cheers

After 11 years I found the only thing that Mikrotik is always compatible with - a dustbin. Unstable hardware running software that is moving between Alpha and Beta releases. Currently the most stable release is 5.26, at least it has some kind of maturity.

You get 2 kinds of people.

Those that take the time to understand a Mikrotik's power and capabilities for the price point, AND

Those who who want to click NEXT > NEXT > NEXT etc

I've never seen an etc button. Ever

Personally for myself, with a small home network with xbox, pc's laptops cell phones, tablets all on the network, I often ask myself, how did I ever manage without one. Granted, I am far from being a network engineer and have never really worked with enterprise networking hardware, but I found the Mikrotik brilliant for me. It basically does as advertised at a great price in my opinion. I love the scripting functionality. I don't think people would run a multinational company's global network on one. It does have its uses in the correct environment.

+10000. My home network would simply not function without my Mikrotik. I can't understand how anyone can NOT have one. The QOS functionality is unrivaled.

Personally, for myself, I will prefer to have a Smoothwall on the perimeter (for content filtering) and a Mikrotik for QoS (traffic shaping). Best of both worlds.

But we are derailing this thread. Can we go back to the topic?

Well, my setup at home is that I've got a Mikrotik router, and connected to that I have an ADSL modem connected to the ether1-gateway port in bridge mode, and the Mikrotik dials out the PPPOE session through the modem. I also have a Huawei B593 LTE router connected to another network port on the Mikrotik, and this is setup to work as a failover if the PPPOE session goes down. Works like a charm.

Just to add to that. One of the other things I do is that the 3G/LTE connection has got a much better upload speed than my ADSL connection, so when I need to upload things quickly I also use the Mikrotik to route protocols that require high upload speed such as FTP though the LTE connection automatically. My ADSL line only has an upload speed of 512Kbps, but with my 3G/LTE I can get about 6Mbps upload speed. So the Mikrotik comes in very handy for controlling that.

I'm thinking of doing that as well. Was it difficult to implement?

Mine has pretty blinkenlights :D

ACHTUNG! ALLES LOOKENSPEEPERS!
Das mikrotikmachine ist nicht fuer gefingerpoken und
mitten grabben. Ist easy schnappen der springen werk,
blowenfusen und poppencorken mit spitzensparken. Ist nicht
fuer gewerken bei das dumpkopfen. Das rubbernecken
sichtseeren keepen das cotten-pickenen hans in das pockets
muss; relaxen und watchen das blinkenlichten.

Been using Mikrotik for about 4 years now. Nothing at the price point can compare.

Using telkom D-link for DSL line in bridge mode and 951i for everything else. For work it is prefect, PPTP to offices and route traffic dst for work subnets via tunnel. Using multiple PPPoE for certain use cases. Home use it is perfect for me. Considering getting a 951iG or something with gigabit ports and getting a Unifi AC AP for wireless.

We use a lot of Mikrotik for our work and found isnt always the best. Most stable version for me has been 6.18. Currently on 6.33.5 for 55days at home and going smooth. PS. Had a lot of issues with 6.31 and 6.32 with CCRs.

Mikrotik is good for a home network, I have to give it that. If it falls over, just reboot. If it breaks, whatever, take it back and get a new one.

But just because it has an option for OSPF/BGP/MPLS, does not make it enterprise or carrier class hardware. What does piss me off is people trying to use it there.

I also have this love, hate relationship with mikrotik :) They just sometimes die for nothing which is irritating, but we have quite a lot deployed so I guess the law of averages apply.

My advise, configure them to do a job and just leave them.

I see people praising mikrotik for their QOS, I must say that the ubiquity edgerouter has much better QOS with FQ_Codel and now supports MPLS as well, so a very good alternative now.

Cisco qualified? :D
