So a friend brought over his pc two weekends ago & was using my 3DTV as a monitor as he didn't bring his. We installed Crysis 3 and the 3D was pretty cool for a while but we eventually ended up playing Minecraft, as one does ..

Now, every Minecrafter worth his salt knows MC only does 3D anaglyph, requiring those red & blue glasses and well .. ain't nobody got time for that! :D

Determined to add another dimension to the game, we furiously googled & found someone who had a SBS project going a few years ago, but he abandoned it and we couldn't get his mod to work on the latest version. We also found this guy, who recently posted that he's working on something but didn't have anything workable yet.

Until tonite when I clicked the bookmark again and lo & behold, he's actually released something!

Apparently it's not 100% yet, but installing it was a breeze and it seems to work ok. Just create a new profile & copy the class files into your .jar (zip file & instructions on his page), then change the option for 3D under video settings.

I haven't tried it on the TV with the shutter glasses yet, as
  • I don't have 3D vision on the pc (that might have to change now!)
  • I'm busy with downloads so can't move the pc, and
  • I'm too tired to lug the 43" over to the study this late in the eve.
Still, there you have it .. Minecraft in 3D SBS for those that want to try it out!

Can you explain the point of minecraft? Do you guys build stuff together? Do you share it online?

All of the above really .. I got into Minecraft as I have 2 daughters who love games but shy away from the violence & gory shooters that I like .. and I refuse to play Sims

It's almost like Lego, or Mechano where you build things from basic components, either for a purpose or sometimes building/mining/farming is the aim itself. The attraction is you use your imagination. I studied engineering so I love automating stuff & the game has mechanics (movable levers, switches, sensors, pistons) and electronics (redstone circuits, daylight sensors, sound generators) that you can combine to move or switch stuff on/off to make other stuff happen. My english teacher will kill me for that sentence :D

Point is you can build a train system with carts to haul your loot back to base came, where it gets dumped into an automatic sorter that'll sort your items into storage chests by type. You can farm & breed animals as well as trap & kill monsters, combine or smelt stuff and make potions to enhance your abilities, all from a world full of raw materials where you start with nothing but your bare hands while trying to stay alive and manufacture/expand to better yourself.

You can play cooperative, try & kill each other or there's creative mode with unlimited resources & non-aggressive monsters. My one girl likes housekeeping so she usually builds the HQ & farms for food while myself and the other goes slaying monsters & scavanging for resources. We play standalone, online as well as on our own local server (it has built in lan-play). Mostly its building stuff while dodging & killing monsters but the main challenge is finding & gathering the raw resources like coal, iron, redstone etc. that you need for construction .. it gets addictive. :wtf:

Online has added in-game games like Skyblock (start on a small island in the sky with amost nothing), Parkour (obstacle courses), Factions, Towny, etc. The other night our online server had a scavenger hunt (finding a number of items in a set time) and horseracing around a proper racecourse that they built.

All good clean fun, but since Diablo 3 was such a disappointment I've logged more hours on MC during the last year than any other game. For R200! (plus you support an indie developer!)

Minecraft worlds are huuuuge, and you have an endless supply of them. One guy on youtube built a 1-1 model of the Starship Enterprise, so you can basically play forever and its never the same. Plus it has the Nether (a level with lots of lava that looks like hell) and The End were you get to kill the Ender Dragon. The game also constantly evolve, latest version introduced horses & donkeys, so when you eventually get tired and stop playing for a while there's always something new to make you return.

I guess as a proper geek I also love the programming behind it, the procedural driven-ness of it. For example everything happens according to rules, certain things only grows on certain types of soil and at certain light levels etc. Only as you learn the rules do you figure out what conditions are needed to make your machine or whatever do what you want it to do.

Dang! Forgive the rambling, I'm still on a buzz from today's go-live so probably sound like a salesman. :o

Like all games some like it some hate it, but for mindlessly killing an hour or two its actually great fun. Best is to give it a go & see for yourself if you like it.

One does not simply just kill an hour or two with minecraft...

You kill entire months at a time :D

True ..

So I had time over the weekend to test out the 3D on the TV itself and it works beautifully!

SBS should have been a default option in this game 'cos just as cartoons showcase the 3D effect best, Minecraft lends itself to the depth of 3D perfectly. Amazeballs to stand in a field of wheat and see each blade of wheatgrass stand out .. you just have to see it! :D

The amount of time I spend on MC I think doing it in 3d would make my brain explode but would love to see it for sure!!! Do you play vanilla or modded??

I've never played Minecraft before, but due to a fluke now have a extra Nexus 7 that my 6 year old daughter can use. I discovered Minecraft for Android while looking for kid friendly games for her. The best of it is that you can start a world on one tablet, then connect to it from another one and cooperate. Being able to go into her world and help her to build something is absolutely incredible.

As a rule I seldom use cheats in any game but I've played around with some mods (machines & minions etc) for fun.

The only mod I probably cannot permanently live without is Zan's minimap mod .. so can i say 'slightly' modded? :p

Cheats?? Mods aren't cheats my friend;) I find REI's Minimap much better than Zan's btw... You'll need Forge for REI tho

It's digital Lego.

If you don't get real life lego, you wont get minecraft.

Was thinking of cheats like enchantment mods etc. What mods to you have?

Speaking of .. I forgot to mention I couldn't get the 3D working with forge, had to install in a clean .jar file. Also, not Optifine compatible yet.

If you had to mod the jar for 3d then is highly unlikely forge will be compatible, tends to throw an error unless it's the only modification to the jar. Haha Optifine is barely compatible with MC so highly doubtful it would work with a 3D unsupported mod, luckily Forge improves framerate even better than Opti now. Only waiting for multi-core chunkloading from Forge now.

Which enchantment mods are you referring to?? I've got over 120 installed and seriously recommend trying modding out, adds a whole separate gameplay that's much more interesting. I got bored of vanilla MC after 3 months, I've been playing modded for over 2 years...

Don't recall the name now but mods allowing you to enchant any object to any level/combo without having the required XP .. kids recon that is cheating.

I've skinned/texture-packed MC before if that's what you're talking about. Also wanted to check out Rei's map but my line was down last night (Telkom!) as a slime chunk indicator could be useful.

The only enchanting mod I use is EnchantingPlus but that just lets you choose the enchantments and level but costs double XP if you do it that way. Never heard of the mods your kids talk about, sounds like something they 'heard'. But if you don't like how a mod works just don't add it, shouldn't stop you from using all mods.

Texture packs are just visual mods actually add stuff(a LOT of stuff) to the game. I'm trying to think of a way to explain it but it's like explaining the point of vanilla MC to someone, it's fairly impossible;)
