Minecraft redstone circuit advice

Im busy building this minecraft based proximity trap.

I kind of have everything down.... except the middle bit. I have completed the bottom (the cow based trigger) and the top (the sticky pistons). What I am having trouble with is the middle.

There is an unlit redstone torch there and I dont know how to do that. Anyone understand their redstone circuits well enough to give advice? Do I need the unlit torch there or can I just continue the circuit to the top with redstone?

Okay, I think I understand now. Did a small demo test in creative mode and I see when you stand on the plate, you switch off the torch which causes the sticky pistons to retract so your victim falls to their death.
