The upcoming Mini Aceman has been spied, developed by BMW & GWM/

Electric Mini Aceman spied for the first time

It is hard to forget the Mini Aceman, its funky exterior and equally interesting interior. The car was only revealed in July as a prototype and already first test vehicles are starting their arduous life.

Courtesy to some eagle-eyed car spotters in China, we have a first look at a production Mini Aceman, in two different versions at that. At first glance it looks just like the Countryman, but it in fact is the new Aceman. Short overhangs and lower profile with the large headlights and tail lights suggest this is the upcoming Aceman in disguise.

The two cars photographed have different wheel designs, unfortunately one of them is stuck on the trailer and the photographer didn’t have a chance to get more detailed snaps. What we do see, is a 5-door small crossover that is neither an SUV nor a wagon.

Surprisingly there is very little detail on the outside, the cars are almost indistinguishable from each other and apart from what looks like a hood-scoop on the front and a glass roof, there are no features that stand out. The note on the car says “no photography” and that’s where the clues end.

New 2024 Mini Aceman gears up to rival Kia Niro EV

Chinese-built electric crossover evolves from outlandish concept to production-spec prototype

Mini is primed to launch the Aceman – its first new model name in 10 years – as a small electric crossover to fill the gap between the flagship Mini hatchback and Mini Countryman SUV.

Due on sale in 2024, the Mini Aceman is a clean-sheet design and the first in a series of EVs using Mini’s Spotlight platform, developed by BMW and Chinese partner Great Wall Motors.

The electric version of the next Mini hatchback will also use this platform.

The Aceman will arrive after the third-generation Countryman, which will grow significantly to become the biggest Mini yet, creating a more obvious gap in the line-up.

Precise dimensions for the Aceman haven't yet been revealed, but the concept shown earlier this year sits 1590mm above the ground, is 4050mm long and is 1990mm wide.

As it shares its architecture with the forthcoming Mini hatch, it's a reasonable expectation that the Aceman will share its drivetrain options.

The Chinese-built electric crossover has been pictured on public roads for the first time

Mini is primed to launch the Aceman – its first new model name in 10 years – as a small electric crossover to fill the gap between the flagship Mini hatchback and Mini Countryman SUV.

Due on sale in 2024, the Mini Aceman is a clean-sheet design and the second in a series of EVs using Mini’s Spotlight platform, developed by BMW and Chinese partner Great Wall Motors.

Sightings of the model have previously been slim, but it has now been photographed on public roads for the first time undergoing a phase of testing near BMW’s research and development centre in Munich, Germany.

The Aceman will arrive after the third-generation Countryman, which will grow significantly to become the biggest Mini yet, creating a more obvious gap in the line-up. The Aceman measures 1590mm high, 4050mm long and is 1990mm wide, but the electric version of the next Mini hatchback will also use the same platform.

MINI will debut all-electric convertible at Shanghai Auto Show

The 2023 Shanghai Auto Show is celebrating its 20th edition. It is just days away and all automakers are preparing to dazzle the world with future electric cars. BMW is not to be outdone and its Mini brand is bringing two electric vehicles to the show and a new digital companion.

Mini Cooper SE Convertible will have its global premiere at the show. The company touts the car as the first “premium convertible in the small car segment.” The vehicle was first unveiled in February but the Shanghai Auto Show presents an opportunity for the public to actually see the car in person.

The first electric convertible from Mini comes with a 184hp electric motor sitting at the front. The 32.6kWh battery provides a WLTP-certified range of 201km (125mi). The car isn’t the lightest and as a result, it takes 8.2 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100km/h. It will be available in a limited run of 999 units and will come with a €60,000 price tag.

The second electric car that Mini is bringing to Shanghai is the Aceman. It’s a surprising move because the concept car was unveiled last July. We would have expected Mini to unveil the electric Countryman officially, but the company decided to keep the car away from the public eye for a little bit longer.

Mini Aceman presents the new design language from the company and as such was the preview of the all-electric Countryman. Full of clever solutions and new technology, Aceman is very refreshing. Unfortunately, it was never meant to become a production model - unless Mini changed its mind.

Mini’s new equivalent of the Microsoft paperclip is a dog called Spike

It looks like you’re trying to adjust the climate control. Would you like help?

Meet Spike. Spike is Mini’s new intelligent personal assistant (read guide dog for your touchscreen) who will be showcased for the first time on the Aceman concept at the Shanghai Auto Show next week. Woof!

Mini says that Spike will help you learn about the operating system of its future cars, although it sounds like he’ll be something of a digital scamp with ‘unexpected experiences and exciting encounters’ in the pipeline too. Which might explain image number three in the gallery above. Thankfully we don't expect any number twos...

Based on an English Bulldog, Spike will be housed in the central screen and driver display, and with ‘Spike mode’ engaged you’ll soon figure out how to adjust the climate control and change the radio station in your brand new Mini. And yes, this does seem like a solution to a problem that doesn't need to exist.

Mini Clubman ends production after 17 years

Novel estate bows out as firm reconfigures Oxford plant to make electric Aceman and Cooper from 2026

The Mini Clubman has gone out of production after 17 years as Mini makes way for the introduction of the electric Aceman, its indirect replacement.

The Clubman first went on sale in 2007 as an estate-bodied version of the Mini hatchback, complete with a novel vertically split tailgate.

It was assembled at the brand's Plant Oxford facility in Cowley since it first went on sale as part of Mini's revival of its entire range.

It has now bowed out to make space for the Aceman crossover and petrol versions of the new Cooper (in three-door, five-door and convertible forms).

These will be produced until 2030, when the plant will switch to 100% EV production following a combined £600 million investment from parent firm BMW and the UK government.

Mini told Autocar the money will chiefly fund an extension of the body shop, the construction of a new area for battery installation and new logistics facilities in Oxford and Swindon.

Confirmed: Mini Aceman will debut next week

Mini confirmed that the Aceman will make its official debut at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, which kicks off next week, on April 25.

The Aceman will slot in between the smaller Mini Cooper E and the bigger Mini Countryman E.

That's the extent of the details Mini delivered in its teaser, but we know a bit more. The new mid-sized EV will come in two variants - the Aceman and Aceman S. Both will have a choice of 40 kWh and 54.2 kWh batteries with the bigger offering 400 km of CLTC range.

Both models use front-wheel drive motors with the base car offering {{181 hp}} and the Aceman S going up to {{214 hp}}.

Creative use of space - reinterpreted: MINI celebrates the premiere of the first crossover model for the premium small car segment. The new MINI Aceman combines compact exterior dimensions with as much room as possible for occupants and an all-electric drive. The result is a contemporary interpretation of classic Mini inventor Sir Alec Issigonis' underlying vision: maximum utilisation of space with a minimum footprint combined with a modern drive concept. The progressive design of the new MINI Aceman provides space for five comfortable seats within a vehicle length of just over four metres. MINI draws on innovative technologies to enhance the interior with an immersive digital user experience, while the MINI Aceman's all-electric drive gives a fresh boost to the characteristic MINI go-kart feeling. Combined with modern assistance systems and hallmark design, traditional brand values pave the way for an all-electric MINI future.

"The MINI Aceman brings a new level of excitement to our all-electric lineup, packed with a truly enjoyable immersive digital experience," says Stefanie Wurst, Head of MINI. "The MINI Aceman is perfect for navigating crowded city streets, while maintaining the versatility and functionality of a Crossover and the Go Kart feeling you can expect from a MINI. I am certain that the sleek design, the performance, and the versatility as a 5-seater Crossover, will make the MINI Aceman a resounding success."

From the outside, the MINI Aceman embodies sporty agility and a self-assured presence. The vehicle architecture of the new crossover model is based on a fully electric drive concept.
