"Mini" nuclear reactor tech could return to SA

The plan to add additional nuclear energy generation to Eskom's grid could see the introduction of small, modular nuclear reactors based on technology originally developed by South Africans, Netwerk24 reported.

Nersa recently announced its concurrence with energy minister Gwede Mantashe's draft determination to procure 2,500MW of nuclear generation, with certain conditions.

This includes that the nuclear build programme must be at a pace and modular scale that the country can afford.

I wonder how many trillions will this cost and how many decades will this take?

Pretty soon we will have "mini-radiated areas" that we won't be allowed to go to.

I think after initial project was closed most of the people working on it left.
Although I'm pro nuclear do we have human capital to pull this project?!

Oh you have got to be ****ing kidding? How back to the future can we go?

Modular reactors make some sense for specialised users in remote locations (aka military), where the cost of diesel and powerlines would be prohibitive. Those are very different requirements from the baseload generation for a national grid.

That is not how it works. Have a look at x energy and their modular reactors.
Sadly this is how nuclear is seen, doesn't matter the tech involved, it also is seen as inferior to "renewables" which technically also produce quite a bit of residual environmental impacts but heeeeey.

"Consultants" must be appointed. Queue at Luthuli House holding your ANC card.
