Hi

Are, say for example, convenient stores, allow to have a minimum amount to be able to swipe your card for payment?
This morning I was refused when I tried to pay for a drink less the twenty Rand with my card.
Its like saying my money is not good enough for them, surely this is against some law or regulation?

Technically it's against the terms of their payment provider to refuse payment

I had a charge of 0.00 go through, the online vendor was probably checking the validity of the card !

Pisses me off when stores/bars do this. The I just leave the goods on the counter and leave.

I can't see why they would do it (I have seen the limits before), since the payment providers charge a percentage of the fee (5%) and not a flat rate.

The bakery in my area has a minimum card swipe value of R85. Thats quite heavy for bread and such. Basically its like saying they actually dont want to accept cards at all.

Considering that certain card swipes used to cost the retailer 5% or a minimum of +/- R6 per transaction (this was back in '04, prolly changed by now), I can see why they wouldn't want to. Strictly speaking it may be against T.O.S., but if it was your shop, would you feel it's fair to lose money through a sale?

Small shops do that... I dont go there anymore

There was this one butchery who tried to pass the 7% fee onto me & I walked. Some furniture shops still do that, but because people are ignorant, they still continue to get away with it.
